Re: End of the road...

That is a shame....I have been with them since the T610i, and my current Xperia S is like the SonyEricsson before it....only better in every way. More stable, faster, better built. Seems a shame to move on just as they are seriously getting their act together.....

Re: How dare they...

You mean the terms in the EULA which are also in the EULA for Xbox Live, T-Mobile, Vodafone, etc etc. But I assume it's OK for those other companies to do it but not Sony because......

I'm personally happy to keep buying Sony stuff as personally, I haven't had a problem with anything I've bought from them. Neither has anyone else I know for that matter, they all seem to buy it for the same reason I do...it's damn good kit. Feel free to think different if you like, but I'd say you'd be missing out on a lot of quality products due to reasoning which is quite frankly, nonsense.

Bodhi
WTF?

How dare you bring common sense and experience into this, this is a Sony bashing story. They did a rootkit don;t you know! A ROOTKIT!

Well, one of their subsiduaries did, completely without the knowledge of Sony themselves. On a CD 3 people bought. Then they dared to get a bit miffed when someone decided to hack their copy protection machanisms to bits so people could play games without paying for them. This resulted in them removing a not-particularly well advertised feature 6 people cared about, which is shocking. I mean how dare they add loads of useful stuff like LoveFilm / Iplayer etc, 3D a DivX support, then take away the ability to turn it into a crippled Linux box? I mean that's just not on.

However in the real world I have every confidence they will sort themselves out. They still make some of the best kit out there. A lot fo the kit in my place is from Sony, and problems with it have been minimal. Any time I have had a fault Sony have sorted it no questions asked. It also tends to place nicely with non-Sony kit, which is more than I can say for the sole piece of Fruitware I have.....

Re: Nokia Nokia Nokia

Having worked for Vodafone in the past I can tell you this is completely wrong, Nokia have had their fair share of duff handsets over the years. Just off the top of my head

6280

N73

N95

N80

Anything N-Series really

7110

6110 Navigator

All with various hardware and software issues, all kept Voda's repairs department busy. Sure the more basic ones were solid, but anything high-end? Nah.

Can't say I'm surprised HTC QC always seemed a bit flaky in my (completely anecdotal) experience. I don't know anyone with a Desire who didn't have to send it back at some point (Power Key issues, overheating, and a bizarre SD Card failure), and the only HTC phone I've had (a SonyEricsson X1i manufactured for SE by HTC) wasn't great, with case cracking issues and a flaky keyboard. HTC also insisted SE used Windows Mobile, which was a bag of sh*t. It still works, but not the best phone I've had.

Re: The Barge Phone

Sounds to me like you purchased without doing any research whatsoever, such as how to spell the name of the phone in the first place.

Deserve everything you get really.....

Bodhi

I'll be quite surprised if it launches with Gingerbread as Sony are currently rolling out ICS to its 2011 Xperia line as we speak, with the Xperia S due to get it later this month. If it does launch on GB, I can't see it running it for very long.....

However, I'm in no rush for ICS for my Xperia S, as GB absolutely flies on it, and I'm struggling to see anything compelling in ICS for now. I'm sure ICS will be lovely when it arrives, but for now, GB is doing the trick nicely.

Re: How long until it breaks itself?

Well I'm sure as long certain sex-deprived oiks don't use any of the features to rip Sony off, I'm sure all the features will remain in as intended.

Strange how people forget about the stuff they actually added into the PS3 since launch, like DivX support and 3D. You know, stuff that people might actually use......

Re: Introductory Special Offer

No but I've heard it does contain a wider variety of joke books, so the Rootkit commentards can get some new material.

It'll be about f**king time as well.....

Re: "how can we make a story out of nothing"?

But Sony did a rootkit like 10 years ago! On a CD 4 people bought! they are teh evil and must be punished!

Or the real answer would be to say that I think Sony have shown great integrity here. Rather than trying to sweep it under the carpet or tell users they were looking at it wrong, they have held their hands up and said - Slight issue, we'll sort you a new one if you have this issue, no questions asked.

"Our first and foremost objective, as it will always be, will be to make the most innovative products in the world. And so we decided how much cash that we needed to do that."

Great! When do they plan on starting?

Romi and Michelle's High School Reunion. A pathetic vehicle for the unfunny one from Friends to be.....the unfunny one from Friends.

Dishonourable mention to Indy and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (for obvious reasons).

Bodhi

Excellent news this, my Tablet S has been brilliant. Lovely bit of kit to use day in day thanks to the design of it and all the free stuff Sony threw in to the mix. The TV remote part is pretty awesome too.

Bodhi

I've got to laugh at all the Mactards on here saying "Well I never use it, so no one ever uses it". Seems a bit like me saying "Well I never use Video Chat, so what's the point in Facetime then?". Just because you can;t figure out how to use it properly doesn;t mean there aren't others out here who find Bluetooth File Transfer bloody useful, be it for quickly sending a photo to my latop without arsing about with cables or quickly sending a pciture to someone else.

There are plenty of us out here who would rather use paper and pen than work the way Apple forces you to work. At least other platforms leave in a bit of flexibility,,,

Wasn;t Greenland called Greenland as when it was discovered it was, er, Green? As in no ice?

Bodhi

Good to see Sony getting back to what made them so great in the first place...in the pre flat panel days, there was nothing to touch a Trinitron set for picture quality, hell we've got a 32" model at home that still gives the flatscreens a bloody nose in Standard Def. Think it might have to last another year so it can be upgraded to one of these new sets.

*awaits inane comments about rootkits and removing random functions from the PlayStation nobody used*

Re: Tesla...

Considering the 'leccy for these comes from essentially the same fuel as cars do currently, how are these going to avoid oil price rises? Surely it just means 'leccy bills will go up instead?

I would also imagine that the price difference between a Tesla and the Lotus Elise it is based on will pay for a shedload of go juice.

However, I think electric cars are a great idea. Well i would if they were more practical, cheaper, sounded decent and didn't contain 3 tonnes of Duracell.

Mine's the coat with the keys to a V8 in the pocket.

Re: What took them so long.

Feel free to take up a job in Vehicle Development if you feel the pace is a bit slow. There's a little bit more to it than "I've had an idea! Lets launch it"".

Actually thinking about it, considering your idea for a hybrid 2 cylinder diesel supermini, I'd rather you didn't...

Bodhi

A diesel hybrid Peugeot? I cannot think of anything I would want to drive less. Walking actually seems preferable.....

Re: SmartTags for profiles is nothing new...

Only problems I see with Llama are

1) It only works for about 2 weeks then completely forgets where the locations are.

2) It makes single core phones run like a dog and chews your battery

3) It's a bit rubbish.

But apart from that, it's ace!

Bodhi

I woukd agree with this, I've recently purchased a Tablet S and as an "out of the box" experience it violates the iPad in ways that aren;t strictly legal.....smooth and responsive hardware, beautiful ergonomics, a bloody useful remote control and some PlayStation games thrown in, with a shedload of extra content thrown in for free using Sony's contacts in the media industry.....

HOWEVER

As soon as you dip into the Android market it falls apart a bit, as the Android tablet apps are nowhere near as well developed as the Apple ones. Luckily the stuff that comes as standard with the Tablet S will keep me amused for long enough for ICS to be well adopted and developers to start running with it, but it does take the shine off one's new purchase. I think the Android Tablet Ecosystem will start to develop and within the year will be up with the iPad offering, its just a bit painful waiting for it,

Bodhi

Might I suggest a trip to Specsavers? As if you take the Vaio hinge out of the equation they look damn near identical.

Bodhi

Yes indeed, it does look very similar to a MacBook Air. Which in itself looks very similar to the Vaio X505 of 2004. What's your point?

Bodhi

It actually costs closer to 3 grand a year in fuel, due to the mileage I'm doing. I worked out I could save about 3 pound a day if I bought a depressing little hatchback, which I would then spend in the pub when I got home to forget about the ordeal of peddling a tiny diesel engine up and down the M6. It requires zero welding, ever (ever heard of galvanised panels?) and very little in maintenance as it has been well looked after in its life. If something goes wrong I just drop it off with my mechanic, who lends me a car to get to work and fixes it to BMW standards for half the price. 33,000 miles I've done in it now and have spent the sum total of bugger all keeping it going, and haven;t even had to get me hands dirty.

All I'm saying is that with a bit of common sense and buying wisely, you can have something far more interesting for a lesser amount. Hmm 1.1 diseasal or lovely 2.8 litre straight six? that is a toughy.....

Bodhi

Why on Earth are El Reg now reviewing depressing little hatchbacks? Seriously, a Kia.....with a 1.1 litre diesel engine......I cannot think of anything I would want to drive less. It's quite tragic that the great unwashed have got it into their heads that they MUST buy a more economical car, when they fail to realise fuel is only a very small part of the bill for running a car, which means manufacturers are released utter tedium like this.

The number of times I have had the conversation with people who have spent 10k+ on a new diesel to save £200 a year in fuel beggars belief. Or the ones who do 3,000 miles a year and insist on going diesel, when a petrol would work out far cheaper. Idiots the lot of them.

Mine's the one with the keys to a 15 year old BM in it. Cheaper to run than a BlueEcoMotiveMotionHybridSynergyDynamics and 1000x more fun too.

Bodhi

Seems fairly pointless to me having voice control on a Telly. I imagine the commands would be

"TV ON"

"Switch to Sky channel"

*use Sky remote for next 3 hours*

"TV Off"

Seems another instance of Apple adding Shiny Shiny at the expense of functionality, I'll stick to my Bravia thanks. I mean it wasn't exactly cheap, but I still expect it to be half the price of this thing, with better picture and sound.

Bodhi

What a terrible idea. Please, please, never have anything to do with vehicle development. Ever.

Diesel indeed. In an NSX. What's next? the Mona Lisa with a tache?

The TV doesn;t consume data either, it consumes a video signal. This is just as immaterial to GG as the charger is. However by your logic it is still a device connected to the phone, so is against the T&C's. @ Richard....Yes....Yes I am :) I am now trying to figure out which Freddy you are :)
Bodhi
WTF?

"I LOVE all the downvotes from people who aren't GG customers, who this in no way affects, but who are very eager to see a service that I use and pay for ****ed up by people not abiding by the conditions of the service...."

No, I think you are being downvoted as you are struggling to tell your posterior from your elbow. Connecting a phone to a TV and watching iPlayer on it is NOT against the T's & C's of GG, as it is not connected to another device which can use its data connection, all the TV is doing is displaying what is on the screen. Pretty much the same way as using the data connection to download maps for the satnav whilst the phone is connected to a BT headset - the TV/BT Headset/Headphones are completely immaterial.

By your reckoning GG customers would have to turn off their data connection when their phone is on charge, as it is connected to another device (the charger), and god help them if they use USB charging......

Plainly anyone can see this is a load of nonsense.
