The best is Knights of the Old Republic (Not the MMO)

KOTOR 2 could have been so much better (You can mod it to be mostly finished now) I would have been really happy if they churned out more of the same with the same frequency as stuff like Call of Duty.

Dark Forces 2 : Jedi Knight / Jedi Academy was allot better than the first one.

Jedi Power Battles on the Dreamcast was great 2 player.

The Star Wars game I ever played was :

Return of the Jedi on the BBC Micro - I think I played it before I had even seen the films.

(I had not seen the Arcade game either).

Ultrabooks - Panasonic Tough Ultrabook be the only one worth getting.

I think the only company capable of making a robust enough Ultrabook will be Panasonic and it will be very expensive.

I would take a well built ultraportable over a flimsy ultrabook always. (If it was for personal use and I was paying anyway.)

If it was a work machine I would probably take the best Thinkpad Ultrabook to see what the fuss was about. (I have never worked anywhere that let me have a Panasonic Toughbook laptop)

h3

I don't see why I cannot get a Netbook with 1280x800 (If it must be widescreen) matte

2GB ram the half decent new dual core atom (The one with out of order execution).

(I want something to replace my ageing IBM Thinkpad X31 Pentium-m 1.7ghz / 2GB ram / Matte / 1024x768 / trackpoint)

I run Linux on it with Xig X on its Radeon mobility 7500 and it works really great. It is really portable and seems to be indestructible. (Everytime I think it is finally dead (I have taken the p*ss completely with it over its lifetime) five mins later the green battery light comes on and it is back fine . (I sometimes don't use it for a few months at a time).

Maybe I will just get a slightly newer similar Thinkpad but I dunno when they stopped being made properly. (The model I have I can imagine with care taken of it would last even longer than mine has). By any normal laws of physics it shouldn't still be working.

I don't want Windows Starter either I want Linux on an SSD (Or some way of getting back the Windows tax).

Might even use Netbsd instead of Linux I like how clean it is. (If I can get working 3d support)..

h3

If they have any sense they will put back some stuff before release.

(Windows 7 still has Windows Classic for god's sake)

The internals are more modern which I don't see any reason to not have.

But I don't want Metro or anything to do with it.

(I like Xmonad so I am not against tiling either really).

What I am against is HTML5 and Javascript and peoples desire to try to do everything with them.

If they made the first class citizen F# I would be happier.

I think I may buy a Lumina 710 though I like what I have experienced of it (On an LG dunno which model with the original iteration. So I am not totally against that UI

And the same UI could be quite nice on a tablet.

If there are really good keyboard shortcuts it might be less relevant as well. (What I don't want to be doing is moving the mouse half way across the screen all the time and doing tons of clicking).

As it stands I just press the Windows key (Used ctrl esc until recently) and type the name of the program I want.

I still position Windows with the mouse but that is it and they stay the same all day pretty much.

Best ISP (Old school Values)

Best old school type ISP I have used is "Andrews & Arnold" they are quite expensive but they really know what they are doing.

h3

If you want to contact an ISP and get a decent answer the best thing to do is contact the NOC phone.

They used to have to be in the whois records but it seems they don't anymore but every ISP will have a NOC phone they probably won't like you ringing it but who cares.

(When I worked in a NOC I always answered it and gave straight direct fast answers).

Dunno what people do these days but it was a long time ago.

The postmaster@pipex.co.uk address should also be answered. (Nominet rules I think never really involved that much with Mail or DNS).

hostmaster@pipex.co.uk should also be answered also but then you are starting to annoy the wrong people. (Or abuse@pipex.co.uk).

You want to avoid any call centres at all costs.

Or hassle your account manager (If it is losing you significant quantities of money or you have an SLA).

There is ways of dealing with ISP's (But it is getting more and more of a pita to do it).

h3

Google doesn't benefit at all you cannot even use most of their stuff properly in China.

Baidu are going to / have made a version with their stuff replacing the gapps.

Cyanogenmod got their radio app contributed from MIUI (MIUI is at its heart a Cyanogenmod KANG).

China could develop something from scratch if it wanted to. (It is probably in a better position than anyone else to do so).

It is different to the West - the government owns all the mobile networks and has involvement with allot of the tech companies also.

It has lots of people / low wages / quite allot of talent (Some of the stuff they manage from nothing is very impressive) and the government can decide that it wants something like this done and make it happen.

I am almost certain within my lifetime they will be the world's biggest superpower. (I am 30 now).

This is advocating click fraud

I thought asking people to click ad's was one of the great no-no s of web advertising.

(Along with clicking your own ad's).

She is basically advocating defrauding the people paying for advertising.

It is click fraud I think.

The only ad worth clicking is the one for the 55 gallon drum of personal lubricant.

(The comments are hilarious on Amazon (US))

(I hate ad's probably more than 99% of the population but I don't agree with Facebook doing this).

h3

Xig could do this 100 times better.

If you look at the amount of horsepower they have it is really inefficient.

Xig's (Xi Graphics) multihead stuff is amazing when you consider how low powered most of the hardware is.

And they use X (Xorg has its problems only because they are doing at wrong as far as I can see).

(2D basic work nicer on Xig with a Radeon 7500 than on a Quadro 3600M)

(Obviously the Quadro's resolution is higher).

I am just a customer don't work for them or have any other dealings with them.

I don't even get how it is possible..

h3

Accenture won't do the job properly.

Accenture are utterly useless at doing anything properly and charge stupid money.

(My experience of them is them doing evaluations of Openview / Netcool and a few others on behalf of an ISP). Then deciding on the most expensive (When the simple thing that we already had worked fine). Then spending 6 months setting it up and at the end it was just acting as a pretty GUI using the output of the existing simple system.

There is no way they are going to be able to do anything like add dual core support to Symbian.

Dunno why they chose Accenture (Probably more Elop stupidity). There are embedded companies that could have done it properly. and probably cheaper.

Android running on the Symbian kernel (With a Freebsd like Linuxulator for the native Linux games etc would rock.) - TBH I dunno why Blackberry's Android emulator stuff doesn't have a kernel based Linuxulator.

Both of Symbian and QNX work properly for embedded when you want decent battery life.

Asus

Asus are the only motherboard manufacturer I have found where I have bricked a motherboard just by changing one setting. (type of sleep from S1 to S3). There was no way to get it out.

I could have sent it back but I kind of thought it was partly my fault as it was documented on the net.

It did really annoy me though.

(Mothers computer that I manage (Only one I still do other than mine but fair is fair she has done far more for me than vice versa)). £125 motherboard - was told to just get another one by tomorrow and it doesn't matter just leave it.

Gigabyte on the other hand have fixed any bios problems I have had really well. (APIC/HPET problems for Linux) I did work out what wrong first though.

Dunno about Asus laptops (I use Thinkpads like the keyboards)

h3

The Major advantage they would have had at the start would have been using jezelle instead of a jit compiler.

If API's can be copyrighted then Oracle could potentially go after anyone using C.

(Sun's joint development of SYSV with AT&T means they have the best UNIX license anyone does better even than what was sold to Novell).

h3

Transitive could have been the solution (IBM saw the risk and dismantled).

Transitive had absolutely wonderful technology for running anything on anything else at almost native speed.

They would have been a lifeline to either HP or Sun but IBM bought them (and basically dismantled them).

(I guess IBM were worried about their mainframe business - They have the skill to do loads of stuff with virtualisation (Hell they have been doing it forever) that they choose not to so as to not harm their cash cow.)

Apple used them for Rosetta

I used them for a whole to run scientific apps that were only available for sparc after Sun stopped selling workstations at all.

They are in a mess and only something really special is going to save them.

(They won't take the risk).

Itanium is a great arch for writing assembler for. If they managed to a quire a team of master chip designers I think they could use the itanium stuff as intermediate and then convert it to something better for real life performance. (Something like a better Alpha).

h3

If I wanted something to use seriously i.e as a desktop running Linux I would use a Pandaboard ES (£145 I think RRP) but really decent. (OMAP4460)

Either this or the PI are good as Toys.

I will buy both if I can get them within a few days of ordering.

(Or an Allwinner / Rockchip one at a similar price).

I like playing with this sort of stuff.

h3

I would be happy enough to just be able to use the Amazon appstore in the UK as is.

I don't trust Google really with my details but I do trust Amazon. (They are fair and reasonable and you can phone them up if you need to all though it is seldom required.)

If I could use prepaid cards with Google Play it might be a bit better but tbh I deliberately create a new Google account fairly often. (And I definitely don't want the same account on phone and tablet)

I am probably in the minority but I trust MS and even probably Apple more with my personal data / credit card details than Google.

(I like WP7 hate iOS and use Android so I think I am fairly unbiased). I think I will get a Lumina 710 soon.

h3

Forgot to clarrify that with regards to the psion I am mainly meaning the keyboard. (But the basic functions worked really well also).

h3

This is a poor review. The ChaCha is a junk armv6. Android is not good at a low resolution even with a qwerty keyboard.

The Motorola pro is fairly good.

(The Milestone / Droid range - and the Xperia Pro (Mini Pro has a screen that is too small) are also good).

The Nokia Symbian blackberry alikes (E71 and its newer siblings) are also quite good.

The Xperia Pro really is a great business phone (Slide mechanism seems similar to the Xperia Play).

Maybe I will try a blackberry ones I can get a QNX one (With a Playbook tethered). I like QNX that I used at a previous job. (Just wish they were less locked down - using pkgsrc/QNX would be awesome).

These modern devices still seem worse than the Psion ones even after all this time.

Re: Subscription TV

It is a powerful ecosystem but there should be the option to pay just for what you want adfree and with a decent cost. (Relative to the cost of the programming).

If I was in the US I would probably only want HBO. (Wouldn't pay for all the rest of the stuff I don't want).

Great content doesn't even have to be expensive to make see something like.

Jerome Bixby’s - The Man From Earth (It consists entirely of about 10 people in a house just talking.)

The way things are set up by all the cable / satellite companies (This one being the only good exception).

Everywhere seems to be fairly corrupt these days. (And stuff like anti trust doesn't seem to be applied in a fair manner.)

h3

Could have been drug money someone wanted rid of or something else illegal.

h3

What they should do is bring back blackboards (Or an alternative to junk whiteboards).

It unnecessarily complicates learning for me..

ipads are not the answer (You have to jailbreak to change the brightness).

Stuff like the Archos G9 is also not the answer (Not robust enough). My mothers schoool got loads and they cannot even manage to keep them charged properly.

If I was a school I would go for Playbooks (RIM would likely be extremely helpful) and give a damn when random junk flash app won't work properly.. (None of the Android manufacturers would give a damn). Loads of the school learning resources use flash.

h3

Store manager - degree and 5 years experience WTF

The Apple ethos is totally against people capable of thinking for themselves so its a strange move.

h3

Violation of this law is just the same technically as me uploading goatse to peoples machines. Surely it should be covered under not installing files on peoples computers without permission.

(Computer misuse act or whatever).

The thing Google does (did ?) certainly should be a crime to get around the Safari no cookies thing.

Itunes seems to have a habit of doing all sorts of crap in the background of computers.

Facebook itself is more of a problem than the purpotrator of - http://forums.theregister.co.uk/forum/latest/2012/05/17/facebook_account_hacker_jailed/

British culture is a lost cause.

h3

They should levy the maximum fine against everyone they can. (Wipe out the deficit quite a bit). Most of the things I wanted existed on the internet prior everyone turning into greedy scumbags.

If you want to do it then do it properly server side.

If there was a search engine that only allowed content that didn't use ad's or cookies I would definitely use it.

(The content providers who complain about the useless drivel they just get from other sites really irritate me.)

If people want a police state it should apply universally not just to easy targets.

h3

Another thing I don't get is the relative sentencing between this and the original phone hacking thing. (How is one Facebook account worse than a lot of peoples phones ?)

(Also seems to be worse than burglary from the odd persons I have known to be sentenced for that).

Another person I know got 6 months for supply of class A drugs (E's) this is probably 10 years ago.

Just doesn't seem fair or proportionate in any shape or form.

h3

Wonder what the law is on posting goatse / lemonparty / tubgirl etc etc on someones facebook feed (That they leave logged in on my computer despite repeated instructions to the contrary).

As far as I am concerned (and have explicitly stated) leave it on my computer and I will do this. (Only thing that sort of seems to work at all).

h3

Only time I use red button is for snooker to switch tables I hope they keep that.

h3

Wolfram Alpha produces more logical results these days than Google (And even shows you why). Google thinks you want something dumb by typing for something else. (Just because of the actions of other people). Genuine typos would be ok but as long as the word makes sense use that.

h3

2 sim phones are always good. (Presuming they can be used simultaneously).

I would like an Android that was of reasonable spec and dual sim at the same time.

(Only the Chinese seem to remotely get this but the ones I have seen are utter junk).

At the min I use a 6230i for calls / texts (Probably lasts a week).

Xperia Play for internet. (Battery life is so bad though cannot really use it that well.)

I would buy a midrange Samsung in a heartbeat if it had the 2 sim feature and a half decent battery. (Do they not sell in China ?)

h3

Firmware Updates ..................

Firmware updates never seem to materialise.

h3

Microsoft stuff is fairly usable these days (Certainly more so than Apple/Gnome 3/Unity)

I use Android but I think it is total junk really.

It is particularly bad at integrating properly with the OS running on your computer.

(Hate web apps - want it to use proper integrated OS features same way as WP7 and iOS (on Mac) do. Android should integrate well with Linux.

(Dunno why they use MTP of all protocols (Why not CIFS) poor Bluetooth implimentation no proper native API)

Too much is just the lazy way out.

Tizen looks like it could be good (WebOS seemed to work well).

Android is just an adware delivery mechanism.

I need a new soundcard (Balanced outputs (speakers take balanced TRS or 1/4" mono jack - (Can take unbalanced but doesn't seem to work very well like that)) / separate channel for headphones).

Dunno what to get but I know it is not this

Any advise (Rather have internal or just the dac external)

Not stupid expensive (Tapco USB I have is getting old bad contacts for speaker cable - No proper W7 drivers either). Don't need any fancy stuff just simple solid drivers.

Only want it to sound half reasonable for listening to music. (Don't really make any music anymore - sometimes play with dj mixing program (Pretty rarely))

(Linux support desired but not essential).

h3

16:9 sucks

16:10 is best followed by 4:3

Any mobile CAD workstation will give you 17" 1920x1200 (And enough power to power a few external monitors if you want - maybe using the dock maybe without).

Don't use consumer junk for work.

h3

There is no such thing as the public interest really (As it is more accurately described as the priivate interest's of those in power - whether it is going to be accepted can more accurately be judged if you treat it in this way).

h3

It is too expensive for what it is. (Should be less than £100 otherwise might as well get whatever few months old flagship (that is not all that fashionable) is on offer).

(Recently it might have been an Atrix or the evo 3d).

h3

Adware should be moved to its own section. (As it stands I just don't install anything that needs full internet access from the market).

People saying it has no cost to you it does wasted time. It is only free if you value your time as worth nothing. (I value it as the most valuable thing I have as it is the only thing I cannot get more of).

h3

The only ones of these games that are decent are Osmos HD (On a tablet sucks on a phone).

and Apparatus.

Best Android Game I have played is Sonic CD. (Perfect on my Xperia Play).

Toki Tori is alright as well.

GTA3 is ok with a pad and on a dual core tablet (sucks on the Xperia Play - Xoom it is ok with a 360 pad).

Modern games generally have no depth compared to the 16 bit era ports.

(When Android gets Chrono Trigger in English that will be better than all the junk new age RPG's)

h3

There is nothing on iOS (Or my Xoom for that matter - excluding using a 360 pad which is inconvenient) better than playing Sonic CD on the Xperia Play with the pad. iOS cannot even have emulators legitimately.

h3

Panasonic is one of the few companies that nearly everything they make is pretty good quality.

Battery looks to be 1800mAh which is probably ok. (I would prefer the battery in the best version of the Motorola RAZR)

But the fact that this seems to use stock ICS (No crappy overlay) is probably a valid trade off.

h3

Does Siegecraft work better on iOS than Android. (I have it on my Xoom the idea is good (Well I suppose it comes from the game crossbows and catapults but I used to love it as a kid) but it is not well implemented.) ?

h3

Qualcomm's numbering sucks now.

(This is armv7 with adreno 200)

And it has little (Maybe same pinout ?) to do with the earlier MSM7225 (That didn't even have a gpu and was on the original wildfire).

Dunno why they bother with the cortex A5 (The main useful features it has (compatibility with the original arm abi / 100% armv6 compatibility (including jazelle) are no use whatsoever for Android).

Guess it must be cartel like behaviour from Qualcomm. Cannot see why this should be any cheaper to make than a 2nd gen snapdragon.

h3

The Solaris 11 dladm method for dealing with wifi is quite nice (Even nwam is better than networkmanager).

If you go away from small programs that do one thing well (and are scriptable or usable in a shell) and input and output text then there is no point still using *NIX. (It is the whole point of the design it is like that for a reason and it all makes sense as a coherent whole).

It is like any tool. (e.g the best coping saw blades snap really easily if you go out of square a tiny tiny bit I could learn to do it but I don't need to but it would be dumb to use them without first learning to use them properly). Computers are the same means to an end.

h3

The problem with Linux is no one other than Redhat has enough resources to do anything.

Which causes anything Redhat doesn't care about to get actively more and more broken all the time.

How it should be is understand one thing everything else is the same basic design.

It is getting layers and layers of abstraction with loads of depreciated api's and other crap and binary formats it is just a mess. (Almost exactly like Windows but it doesn't work as well).

Only good thing happening at the moment is Samsung paying for the development of e17 to be finished.

(Any GUI all I really use it for is running clementine a few xterms and a browser).

I was fairly happy with one of Linux / FreeBSD / Solaris for about 15 years as my desktop.

I no longer am though so I use Windows 7 (With UWIN which is probably more POSIX than GNU) colinux if I need it.

I have a Linux from Scratch laptop (Only way I can use XiG's xserver which is what Xorg should be).

Too much hassle to avoid the things I know I don't want (pulseaudio / systemd / alsa / Xorg / avahi / cups) and stuff like flash needs allot of messing around to work with oss4.

RHEL 6 is usable I guess. (RHEL 7 will be utter shite if it keeps gnome 3 / Ubuntu is a joke / Opensuse is messing up the stuff it was best at like xen (systemd breaks it guess there will be a time soon when sysvinit is not an option).

FreeBSD is great just as it has always been I was expecting due to the specs being released some usable ati drivers by now. (Bought this card ages ago due to that action by AMD still useless - no one can write X drivers except XiG).

Solaris cannot use it securely anymore due to Oracle.

(I use focus follows mouse on Windows which is another thing I must have - it should be the default on any *NIX OS - I might have used a Mac if it had this but even though Nextstep had it they dropped it which is moronic).

I have very little hassle with Windows 7.

h3

This is stupid. (Every woman I know other than my grandmother uses social networking).

Whereas a fair amount of the men I know don't use social networking at all.

Perhaps the men who are concerned just don't use Facebook.

Thinking you have any privacy at all is nonsense the second you sign up to one of these sites.

(Twitter perhaps being the exception).

The fact that people trust the privacy controls at all is the worst sign of the way our society is degrading.

h3

My favourite ones are the ones that take place far from earth.

(Think ones like Genesis of the Dalek's are best).

Don't like Amy Pond or Rorrie or River Song.

Quite liked the doctor's daughter though and the character of the tardis.

I think it is better to do long proper stories in 4 parts or whatever (45*4 is long enough for a decent story on an alien world).

For decent movie sci fi you need at least 2hrs so I don't get how 14 "blockbuster-movie episodes" can happen.

The thing I would be most interested in would be the timewar. (Timelords vs Dalek's).

Dunno whether it was the 8th or 9th doctor who was around then or not.

I liked the Christopher Eccleston series better than any of the other new ones. (Get the impression they spent more money on it - but I am not that bothered about fancy effects - mainly bothered about quality of dialog and alien worlds).

The Google Market is awful to use. (Most of the best apps I have I found out elsewhere).

Guess it might be ok if you want what the most people want.

But most people have no taste in anything which is where the problem lies. (It is the same with Music / TV / Films / Newspapers / Books / Apps anything the ones that do the best commercially are never the ones I want - I am aware that by definition those things are the ones most people want doesn't make it any easier for me though).

h3

Has to depend on how it is done.

(Qualcomm and Motorola probably just crosslicensed).

Both have patents of decent value (As does Nokia).

Apples patents are for really dumb stuff that shouldn't be patentable.

h3

RHEL is used as a desktop by people using stuff like Cadence. (Probably the other EDA suites as well as getting them working on Windows is a nightmare). Probably the people who pay nvidia to make the Linux drivers use it as well. (Hollywood type people). It is the only supported desktop for Red Hat universities (That students can use for free) there seems to be a few.

It is used by people who care about bugs actually being fixed in the distro. (And pay for it)

Ubuntu is an absolute joke even the LTS release you need any bug at all fixed (Let alone an obscure libc bug it is just not going to happen).

Look at any serious piece of desktop Linux software and you will find it supports RHEL (and Suse Enterprise if you are lucky).

Those people quite rightly don't want Ubuntu.

(It is likely just those people using stuff like Cadence Virtuoso give Redhat enough money to make the Desktop distribution worthwhile. (The per seat cost to Cadence means it is also likely to cost peanuts but Redhat still do well)

h3

I would pay more to avoid Yodel (Formally the Home Delivery Network) unfortunately I seem to be denied the choice.

h3

This list is totally dumb. (About my limit is asking directly what they want or failing that send expensive flowers to wherever they work). They seem to like the my boyfriend is better than your boyfriend thing.

Bluetooth is about the worst possible idea (Anything that is not working 100% is a waste of time for women in all circumstances).

The drive still won't be used regardless.

Most important thing is what it can do for them (And whether it works 100%). (Whether it is easy to use or not is sort of an issue but less so than what it can do and whether it works).

If they are not attracted to pink then it actively repels them. (Which is what makes it so pointless making the products - unless it is something that so many want - a pink ipad would probably sell enough to be worth it).

I think a 3G ipad most women might like. (I know even women over 80 who use them so I think it a fairly safe bet. (One who I have met the other being the Queen)).

And of course anything sapphire or harder in a ring in case they ever get buried alive in a box.

(I don't profess to know a great deal about this but for certain I know more about it than the article writer).

h3

I hope Apple gets absolutely hammered in the courts. They started this (The radio patents are the worthwhile ones).

The reason why this has happened is because of Apple refusing FRAND terms in the past. (The Qualcomm chips in the 4S are already licensed). That is why it is 2.25% for *past* infringement.

They want FRAND now and to ignore the past. (Which is against the FRAND terms).
