Now I feel old

There are some things that seem foreign as we mature, trying to secure the network, data and other users against every bit of equipment users want to bring in is for me, a big one.

Could be an upside, at reviews I have to say what I've done and it normally resolves around proving a negative "how much time and money has been lost to downtime?" once the whole thing blows up in someones face and they realise nobody on site has the wherewithal to fix it they may just see there is a value in unseen "boring" IT.

Value consitency

I see this as a fully justified increase in the financial numeration leverage channel customer facing interface exchange valuation quantification.

Entirely in keeping with previous value-add offerings from this going forward looking 360 degree capitalization embraced re-enumeration hierarchy positive organisation with benefits.

The windows down, some heavy beat coming from the thing as it slowly cruises up the main drag, the guy behind the wheel (for it will be a guy) will be smug in his own arrival at the nirvana of Blue LEDness while the rest of think what a complete and utter W@n**r!

It will have a personalised number plate.

Evolution, why did we ever stop.

Couple of things not mentioned but standard good practice (old wives tales?).

Add spaces to the key (I believe this extends time to dictionary brute force but is easy to remember).

If you leave the router powered (as we are warned to by BT to "Avoid speed loss" - Oh screw the planet) have a wireless schedule, DD-WRT allows this to the hour and for many households and companies it makes sense, why exactly does the WIFI need to be on 3AM?

On 2.4G use channel 13 if you can as it takes the WIFI off the Radar for older hardware.

Use single band 5G for same reason, it seems to stay in the confines of the house better too.

Reduce interference - Don't have either end of the wireless link beside DECT phones, Plasma TV's, switching power supplies to avoid the high noise level forcing you need to crank up the power and therefore increase the risks and interfere with neighbours wifi - who crank up the power etc.

If you don't need 150/300Mb reduce the channel use on 2.4G by dropping to a lower value, it can end up more reliable and reduces the WIFI arms race. Sometimes picking 56G and one fixed channel can give a link that stays solid all evening (if a bit slower) rather than dropping out every five minutes depending on who ends up with what channel and how much they are currently streaming.

Sorry geeky response ...I'll get my...

What's network coverage like here? Oh we have US4V, Don't you mean 4G? No we have an American Vagrant at cardinal points.

We've made one a tree house as his coverage didn't quite go all the way to end of the pool. Doesn't that mean you are taking advantage of these poor chaps? Well we keep them warm with scraps and old coats (it helps the battery life).

Oh I say how jolly charitable.

I think this is a wonderful insightful story and I am terribly grateful for The Register sharing it with us.

May I say how fit all the respondents are looking today, stylishly dressed too (that really suits you BTW) Have you lost some weight?

As ever, a bright spot in my day,

Thank you all.

New Logo !!!!! New Stationary!!!!!!New Identity!!!!!!!!

Once BT took them over I decided not to use them unless unavoidable.

I remember (as with other comments) the staff being fine and a little surprised that my response to "We are now part of BT" (rising terminal) was met with a long silence as my head dropped.

When will the "Re-branding" "New Logo" "Corporate Identity" pedlars work out that when a name like "BT" is used by every slippery VoIP salesman/woman or incompetent local franchised company then there is a large chance that its not a "Value-add yah".

Nice bonuses at top level no doubt and probably a re-branding to sort it out, new stationary, new logo.

How many current high level managers "started out" in IT?

I suspect its not many, so the lack of understanding and awareness is driven from the top.

How many "successful" managers, driving big cars see the value of strong passwords or lean OS?

The old guard will die out and hopefully with them the tendency to tape post-it-note passwords to the screen.

Move on, move up and when you are a manager and faced with something you don't see the value of get current advice.

Remember unlike many previous professions it is not possible to have "Learnt IT" there is no final chapter, just a constant changing ecosystem with advantage and risk.

Much of the stress comes from the IT world having been wedged into the inflexible existing architecture of businesses, if a boss is "Crap at IT" we should be free to flag that, the stress is trying to make IT work like something the dinosaurs can drive.

Heuristics over hubris.

Do you get to see a transparent version of yourself overlaid (!) from the last time you used it?

I'm trying to beat my best!

Probably some game manufacturer out there now devising a set of levels for "trigger happy" lads to work through.

First level is obvious and only the most committed push through to a "Knightley".

Reset to cloud recovery

One of the options should be to reset just enough that you or tech support can access a lightweight web enabled basic interface for system wide checksum / virus scan / file check.

You hit "Reset to Cloud" and the thing makes itself accessible by teamviewer / secure-remote-protocol of some kind that allows your support tech/ vendor/ grand-kids to run the "check for nasties script" and to a phased restore.

MS have a habit of changing the hammer or the nail but never quite questioning the need to make things go bang by hitting them.

This is almost useful but I bet the original idea has been crippled by muddle management.

The basics of an OS and the hierarchy of support capabilities are more subtle than "It borken make same agane, but no screnesava"

Help is out there and if you could get it working to level 3 (basic web browsing - read only files system + file sandbox) you could contact support and maybe even finish your holiday before trying to work out why a full reset fails after an hour every time.

Reset To Cloud would even work as an acronym for techies "We've had multi unit RTC in sales"

I'm rambling now aren't I.

Not professional

Surely there should be some mention of the "Forkers" in sales.

At some version that is almost usable, fork out the bits people are capable of "using" and make them add-ons.

Call the one with the bits still in "Professional" so all the people who would choke on the 30% price hike can be insinuated as "Unprofessional", jokers versions, bedroom version, sticky mouse version.

Only those forkers in sales know their own value.

SImpler times

Used one for many years, monitored channel 9 for a while and actually managed to help a few people, called doctors, police, relayed messages between walking parties and scouts on hills of Exmoor. All seems daft now mobile phones are everywhere but was good natured fun back then. If it was invented now you'd have adverts every fifteen minutes unless you bought a subscription and those adverts would be focused on the words you just said.

When the skip was in it was like a audio spotlight on the world, different bits of the globe floating in like some weirdly orchestrated choir of strangers. The sun spots have been quite active of late and the conditions have favoured that frequency again (just testing SDR these days).

I made more real friends on CB than I have ever made via the internet, the scope is there but not the heart.

Lock-in that must be what makes Apple good right?

I can see the rows of MS management desperately trying to find that thing that makes the Apple experience work for so many people (I'm not one BTW) -

"they lock people in, maybe we should do that!", "Yeah lets lock them in -with their wallets OF COURSE (chuckles all round)" , "Hey how about blocking Flash!!! Apple do that!!!!" so it goes on -

Good job you guys! you have identified some of the things other companies do, just not the things that are so innovative, well engineered and efficient that they can get away with that other shit.

Let us know how that works out for you.

Monthly outage leads to extended downtime

I thought a common reason for those pumps blowing fuses was "Feminine Products" being put down the loo.
