"I won't put up with restrictions imposed by blokes whom I already paid for their product"

Nope, you'll put up with restrictions imposed by blokes at Google, instead of the blokes that you paid for the product.

Re: Think you'll find Apple make sheep ;)

Sure, Apple make sheep.

Those apple sheep must look quite foolish to the 95% of different, free-thinking computer users all running windows.

And those 55% of out-there, trying something different smartphone users all running Android

:)

"Apple has won precisely by betting against the openness of the web with a closed ecosystem"

No they didn't, their entire philosophy for the iPhone when it launched was that apps would be web based, using safari.

They bowed down to pressure from developers to allow 3rd party native apps.

Re: Anyone still not developing for Android?

Whilst I kind of agree, Samsungs are generally high end smartphones that probably generate a lot of app revenue, I dislike your general fandroidism...

Assuming your figures are correct, 74% OS market share does not equal 74% app market share.

Many low end phones are shipped with android, and a much higher percentage of Android users that do download apps could be considered to be "freetards" (Don't like paying for apps).

So your sweeping statement suggesting all app developers should be targeting Android is not necessarily true. For some profitable iOS developers, the additional development may not be worth the additional revenue.

There is, he's on it. It's called El Reg

Hey, where did all the fandroids go?

You know... The ones that were crowing when simmilar news was reported on Apple?

Re: .cymru

Not a fan of all these new tlds either, It will make branding and advertising URLs a lot harder. I think you're right, things will get more confusing for your average user.

But to be fair .wales is the same amount of characters as .co.uk, so I don't think "cumbersome and long" is a valid argument.

Re: ITV

*sigh*

This product has not been confirmed by Apple. If indeed it does exist, Apple have not released anything to say that they will name it iTV. El reg and other websites are simply giving a name to a probable product, that might emerge, maybe soon.

Please use your brain.

"Imagine being able to hook up your DVD player by just plugging in the cable and clicking a button."

Almost like plugging in a scart lead and pressing AV on your remote.

THE SERVICE varies greatly depending on where you are in the country and which part of their network you are on.

I've had amazing service and piss poor service in 2 different places.

Maybe they were drinking diet drinks because they were fatties* and that was the reason for an increase in vascular death?

*No offence intended, I'm also a fatty

craigj

Hmmmm

How many articles can El reg drag out of re-interpreting different figures from different countries & surveys in different manners to tell us that Apple/Samsung/iOS/Android is number 1?

Every other day there are contradictory reports that either iOS or Android is beating the other by looking at specific figures / surveys.

craigj

You do have horrible ads that start of big and then shrink, moving my eye away from what I'm reading though

craigj

run your own named/bind9?

Seems a little excessive when you could just add the domains to your hosts file, no need to run a dns server

craigj

Wow you're right!

It also wont mend my computer if I inadvertently throw it in a river, MS should probably ditch the feature then.

craigj
WTF?

What?

"made the Galaxy Tab 10.1 a household name compared to probably what it would've been based on the investment that we would've put into it "

It either is a household name or it isn't - It can't be a household name in comparison to probably what it would have been.

Twitter isn't & never has been a booming business. It's a booming web property, butTwitter doesnt make any $$$

Microsoft's algorithms were useful in understanding the mutation of HIV

I knew they had to be useful for something, because they don't stop the spam I receive daily

craigj

Well...

The truth is, there are some very nice android phones out there...

but hardware manufacturers will stick Android on any old phone, whether or not those users are likely to use its "smart" features or buy apps.

A good chunk of those android device owners will use it *shock horror* as just a phone for calling & texting.

That's why I think the idea that Android is leading the smartphone market is stretched a little. Smartphones sold != Smartphones used.

"it "examined" all 721 million active Facebook users"

One would assume an account has at least one connection to be defined as "active" by this experiment.

Don't really think this needed to be reported on.

The man was dying, did we really need to know the poor guys last monosyllables?

Admit it Lewis Page - You wrote this just to get a chuckle out of the commentards didn't you?

craigj

Validation?

Much as I hate it, a typo squatter's, spammer's or con-man's $10 is as good as anyones to godaddy.

They still flogged 50 million domains.

Personally I'm not sure how, their platform is one of the worst I've ever had the displeasure of managing domain names on.

Re: I completely ignore phones unless

I completely understand, how could you be expected to know how to answer, without a ring-ring?

But then you probably also didn't realise it was a phone, as it wasn't plugged into a phone socket in the wall, and didn't have a rotary dial that you turn round and a curly cord connecting the headset to the base unit.

craigj

Well...

Can't really blame them for trying...

Opera showed us that if shout loudly enough, you can get your competitor to advertise your product freely alongside their own.

Yawn

El Reg seems to post an identical story about once a year that somebody has [gold plated / diamond encrusted / added expensive tat to] their [iPhone/iPod/MacBook] - I like apple products, but this is boring.

craigj

Great...

Why don't we ban telephones, royal mail and speaking to people. That should stop 'em!

craigj
Facepalm

Hmm

The article seems to suggest that Apple is a step behind other vendors in shipping an OS thats geared towards the cloud and web apps.

Has everyone forgotten that iOS launched without native app support (apart from mail etc which shipped with iOS)? Jobs said that iphone apps would all be web apps. Native apps only exist because of overwhelming demand from users & developers.

craigj

No. 2

Stop

Is nobody seeing what I'm seeing?

Despite more and more android devices being sold, overtaking iDevices in the phone market, their use on the web is meagre.

I think a big chunk of these android devices being sold are low end phones, whose owners are not using the web (or even apps?)

Therefore when the android fanbois go on about beating apple, they are actually just quoting sales figures for devices in a market that apple currently doesn't compete in (low end phones).
