"that HSPA+ is almost as good as LTE so it's not important"

Seems like an argument that can go both ways. If HSPA+ is similar enough why confuse the market with rather rare and non EU compatible 1800Mhz LTE hardware - mostly deployed only in Australia - just for a few months' sake?

>>much of the hardware is undocumented

>Tell us how much, say NVidia, is documented.

Why NVIDIA? I'd never use NVIDIA for any computer whose hardware I wanted to hack around with.

NVIDIA is evil, they've just dropped Linux support for PC chipsets with their Optimus tech.

The Mali 400 on the other hand is already pretty well documented.

Re: May have to get one

> Having the GPIO ports means that stuff like one-wire sensors and other stuff should be easily hookable to it.

While that's true, the Pi 's GPIO pins are 3.3v and NOT 5v tolerant - this is a big problem for many, if not most, sensors and gadgets which output 5v signals.

It's better to simply use one of the cheap Arduino clones connected via USB to handle GPIO and connections.

Having this setup also lets you do I2C, I2S and implement many bit-bang protocols more easily (and efficiently as you offload driving the pins to the ATMEL processor and free up the main CPU).

Actually the Raspberry's upcoming Gerboard also comes with an Arduino-like micro controller to do this.

Loads and loads of schools with older monitors?

Actually seems a more appropriate platform to learn programming than the Pi - you don't need 1080p video playback for that, but extra memory is nice.

Re: @Metavisor

> Look up George Mallory

Thanks for educating me about Mr Mallory, apparently he died trying to reach the Everest summit.

But this is related to reverse engineering a GPU how exactly? If you're using Everest as a metaphor, maybe a successful explorer who didn't die would be a better example.

Plus the Everest was and is not going away anytime soon, any exploration you do will be useful for generations to come, while by this time next year this little SoC will be in the scrap heap and forgotten.

Re: @Metavisor

"If you need to reverse engineer the GPU you could try asking the linux community. They being doing that sort of thing for years."

Well yes, with some varying degrees of success of course. It's not easy peasy (I worked on reversing the Tseng Labs ET4000 on the well known x86 platform and that was enough for me, can't even imagine the work involved for an ARM-connected 3D core)

The other problem as I said is there's no good argument to make for reversing the Pi's GPU, because this GPU is almost exclusive to the Pi.... The Roku 2 is the only other platform that uses it, but the Roku 2 has so far never even been rooted and is now deprecated, so a graphics driver for that is not something that's really needed.

If the foundation changed their SoC in a future Pi all the many months (years?) of work would be rendered useless.

You're posting on an IT related site why exactly?

Re: TV USB powah

> I think it's adequate. I was running almost all 1080p videos I had.

Have you tried playing Quake 3? Do you have anything on the Pi's USB port, like WiFi or a disk?

As I said three times already the Pi can easily pull more than 500mA and in fact the quoted spec is 700mA.

Your setup may work reasonably with just 500mA, but that's not a general rule you should be making. No need to to be sarcastic either.

Re: @Metavisor

I get it @Chris W you have no clue what you're talking about, do you even know your GPU from your PSU?

Reverse engineering the Pi GPU would not be "pioneering spirit" it would be a utterly useless waste of time since that particular SoC is not available for sale to the public. Actually, since Roku changed their design I don't even know anyone else using it other than the Pi foundation.

There are however other cores widely available on the market that are much more appealing such as the Mali 400, which already has a functioning open-source stack.

Re: TV USB powah

"Oh... I better stop doing that then. Thanks for the heads up.

I have it powered happily with my Panasonic TVs usb port."

You haven't pushed the GPU far enough then. Pi at full tilt needs 700mA, regular USB port is 500mA.

You can't power it off your TV's USB port, there's not enough power for the Pi.

@Chris W

Not exactly since much of the hardware is undocumented. Good luck trying to write a Windows graphics device driver without that...

The hardware GPU also specifically does the loading of a Linux kernel, not Windows, so you're have to find some way of faking it.

Funny how a £16 Linux computer becomes £30.87 at RS...

Anyway gave up on that and got a Mele A2000 instead. Real SATA port - tick. Open-source supported GPU (Mali 400) - tick.

Camera you say? More closed firmware rubbish as it relies on the Pi's closed GPU.

I'll just leave this here

"Shenzhen is one of the fastest growing cities in the world, with a provincial GDP of US$42 billion -- that's more than some countries such as Guatemala and Lebanon, and four times more than Iceland.

Meanwhile, China's millionaires keep millionairing -- it won't be long before there are 1 million U.S. dollar millionaires in the country, guided by Shenzhen's philosophy: if you can't make a million, make a billion."

Re: Why no Android phones?

Maybe... I don't understand Google's 2-step authentication very well (specifically how it handles those application specific passwords, how do they know it's the same device/app?)

But that's another thing I never understood either, Google has complete control of the whole stack, so why can't they implement their own 2-factor authentication for Android?

Metavisor

Re: Says it all really

Umm I don't see many conferences calling themselves "Microsoft Expo" around, when Microsoft isn't involved, do you? Or even "Google <something>" when not specifically backed by Google.

Must be simply because organisers haven't thought of that yet, of course. /s

Metavisor

Re: Why no Android phones?

Well you can say the same about the Apple ID and password... Would they give that so easily?

Metavisor

Re: "Cops don't need your actual phone any more"

> Being able to get at this data just knowing the apple logon is a bit poor

No. you need the login details AND you need to buy this expensive software which cracks the encryption using GPUs etc.

It's not suitable for mass usage like the phishing scenario you propose.

Metavisor

Re: Why no Android phones?

Well if you have the user's Google login and password which he uses to sync the phone - like the Apple ID/pass you need for this one - you can pretty much get their information straight away online, no expensive and slow decryption software even needed.

Metavisor

Victims? Really?

So, given the circumstances - ridiculously low price, approached in forecourts, etc - these punters know there's a 99.999% chance these would be stolen laptops or phones and still go for it?

I'd say the police should fine them for attempting to purchase stolen goods, not help them or call them victims.

You misunderstood me, I said interventions not injuries..

As the article says the cars were always operating with a human driver behind the wheel. I wonder how many overrides and corrections the human driver had to make to avoid accidents.

Also where was the car driven? I can't really see a computer driven car interpreting UK roads built around the 60s. Hell I can't even believe it will manage a busy roundabout.

With how many human interventions during those 140000 miles? Do you happen to know Barry?

Re: API should not be subject to copyright

I thought that every Software API is derived form the x86 Intel instruction set.

Well that's only true for software running on the x86 architecture, what if you are running ARM processors for example?

I also suppose, looking at court cases between Intel and AMD, the instruction sets themselves are copyrighted and licensed. Aren't they too a form of APIs?

Re: Copyright an API?

Aren't the x86 and AMD64 instruction sets also an API after all?

I think we've also seen a few battles between at least Intel and AMD over that.

@P. Lee re mobile use

It's not that, if you look at the Mobile vs Desktop plot you'll see the weekends make hardly any difference. Mobile is also still far away from the desktop levels of web browsing.

@dancecat

This bug only records passwords of users who logged in locally on the machine.

You're correct in saying you need local admin rights on the machine to read the log file.

But the clincher is if you have admin rights there are already more of ways of harvesting passwords entered locally (think trojans, key loggers...)

Please show us how you can get an "average read speed of 208.7MByte/s" from a server connected with 1Gbit/s Ethernet? (which has a top theoretical speed of ~ 100MByte/s, in reality much less)

The whole talk about NAS and servers is completely irrelevant here, this is for people who want VERY fast storage.

You mean like some 100 apps can do as well on the iPhone?

> change batteries (essential, essential when traveling)

For travelling get cheap external battery or battery case.

> Play Video/Pictures to my TV direct from my phone (wireless via DLNA)

Get the iMediaShare free app and you'll also have a DNLA pics/video/music server on any iOS device.

> Switch sims in seconds (using standard sims, essential when traveling)

I switch SIMs on the iPhone in about 3 seconds, don't even have to power the phone down (try doing that on the SGS...).

Most networks offer MicroSIMs these days, but if not you can cut always cut to size. The industry's moved on you know? Even Android phones use microSIMs now (see HTC One)

> add 32Gb sd card, and change at will!

But you have to hack the phone to install large apps/games to the card. Some won't even work there no matter what.

> Navigate with built in turn by turn navigation (I am sure there must be an app on iPhone, but I really like google navigate)

A toy compared to Navigon or TomTom's apps.
