There are now graphics cards that can combine the audio from s/pdif pins on a compatible motherboard, by a short internal cable to the graphics card.
I have just upgraded my media computer to this.
It means that the tv signal (DVB - Mpeg2) does not have to be converted at any point.

HDMI is the way, and that includes PCs...
