I can assure you that the RasPi is perfectly capable of running 1080p video, from local storage, or network attached.
Moving around the menus in OpenELEC/XBMC is not particularly snappy, but once you hit the "play" button, the performance is excellent. I have yet to notice a single dropped frame, or sound drop-out, and I've been playing with mine for nearly two weeks... (Ooh er missus).
Indeed. My daughter and I watched a 2 hour film last night, (using Openelec/XBMC), run from a SAMBA share on an Ubuntu 10.4 box. It didn't drop a frame!
Bloody marvellous little baby.
I'm not too sure how long that micro USB power socket is going to last though...
I think you are being a tad harsh on the Raspberry Pi Foundation there. The Pi IS available now, albeit in limited numbers.
I just found out that Element 14 / Farmell have debited my account for the £29.46, and delivery is expected next week, maybe even sooner. The next batch are due in a fortnight...
I was going to follow up that very point on an earlier post, but couldn't be bothered...
However, the highly regarded Wikipedia states:
The international nautical mile was defined by the First International Extraordinary Hydrographic Conference, Monaco (1929) as exactly 1852 metres.[1] This is the only definition in widespread current use, and is the one accepted by the International Hydrographic Organization and by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM).
What we both thought of as a proper nautical mile, is in fact, a sea mile. Vis:
In English usage, a sea mile is, for any latitude, the length of one minute of latitude at that latitude. It varies from about 1,842.9 metres (6,046 ft) at the equator to about 1,861.7 metres (6,108 ft) at the poles, with a mean value of 1,852.3 metres (6,077 ft).[6] The international nautical mile was chosen as the integer number of metres closest to the mean sea mile.
Farnell have invoiced me for £26.55 + VAT of £5.31 making a total of £31.86. (Further stock available in 30 days, or so it says.)
RS have my registered interest at £21.60 with no mention of VAT or delivery costs. The very stressed lady on the phone said they would be on sale from 5th March... She didn't even have a part/item number for it...
Thanks to every-one at the Pi shop, and try not to let the whingers get you all down. ;o)
Spoke to RS Components, was told it's pre-order only. On sale from 5th March...
Spoke to Eben Upton, he was surprised, but assured me that mass production will be under way shortly. Time frame two weeks. (Sorry about that early call Dr. Upton)
Shame about the lost sleep, and the worn out F5 key...

Re: Open Sans
Smashing is NOT a word that springs to mind.
Grating and dis-jointed are a couple that do.
And please don't think of passing it on to the rest of dear old Reg.
TYVM.
It's even infected the comment box. Get some anti-biotics and some linament, quick!

Wot! No beanz?
Brekkie just isn't the same without a splodge of over-cooked baked beans.
And that bacon looks more like a gammon steak.
And "those" aren't proper sausages.
And where's the mushrooms?
And...
Fuck it. I'm starving now... Reaches for frying pan...

I'm a really happy (and smug) bunny. ;o)
The real reason people don't like Unity is, you can't...
Just say no!
At install time, an option for Gnome 2/3, or Unity, or LXDE, KDE, XFCE, or your WM of choice.
All on a DVD sized ISO Torrent.
Not a lot to ask, is it?
Go on. You know you want to....
Time to drop 'em and bend over...
Part my cheeks, and let Uncle Sam have a good old rummage through my privates.
No such thing as a "Safe harbour" where tour^H^H^Herrorists are concerned.
Did any-one vote for this?
Obvious icon is obvious...
@Blubster. Time for a finger up the bum?
If you are regularly getting up for a piss during the night, you might want to get your prostate checked out...
It's only a blood test these days.
No Finger up the arse icon... Have a thumb instead. ;o)
Why not just rent the proper Cape Canaveral?
NASA don't seem to be using it much these days...
Three launches planned this year, one of them is a Falcon 9.
No launches showing yet for next year.
EIS already done.
Sorted.
Worse speling n grammer evar?
You decide!
Nice of Microsoft...
To bring their own brand of security failings to the Apple platform.
Will they be doing the same for us *nix users?
EMC... Erm...
Could i have that again please.
In English.
Because apes need a laugh...
The apes at Howlett's Zoo down this way used to take great pleasure in taking large mouthfuls of water and spitting them at their human spectators...
Really funny if it's not you that cops a hit. ;o)
Nokia 6310i ?
A few days use as a telephone, 5 seconds to swap out the battery, 10 more to start up.
For everything else important, there's Barclaycard^W a laptop and a 3G dongle.
Hope that helps. ;o)
NURSE!
Get the mind bleach, QUICK!!!
@Robert
When I lived oop 't North, (though not that far north), I was known as plain old softysouthernpoof...
I'm neither soft, nor poofy, and I was living with a rufty tufty northern bird at the time...
I'm led to believe it's a term of affection. ;o)
Happy days. Fscking cheap too!
$100,000,000,000 for what exactly?
I just don't see the value to anybody except MZ and friends.
$15 for every person alive on the planet.
For what?
Time for the "Special Brew"...
@Graham Wilson
You hit the nail square on the head there matey. I totally agree with everything you said about the innate security failings of the Windows model.
But, will it change?
Will it fuck!
Windows. Just say no.
Pile of water?
A neat trick!
If I get a shovel, could you pile all the water at one end of my pond, so I can clean out the other end?
Thanks.

@Marty Re: 26th March delivery
Yesterday, I had a delivery date of 26th March.
Today I woke to an email telling me expected delivery date of 23rd April. You may want to check your inbox!
Never mind. As long as it gets here eventually.
Surely they can ask those nice Merkins...
To measure it with one of their super accurate RADAR satellite thingies they have whizzing around.
Aren't they supposed to be able to measure the height of things quite well?

@SteveK Re: 650 feet is shallow waters?
As eny fule nose, you need at least four times the length of chain/rope as depth of water. Twice that in bad weather.
</salty sea dog>
650 feet is shallow waters?
That would need an anchor chain/cable over half a mile long...
Typo?
Wot? No parallel port?
Oh deary me...
Joking aside, this is too little, too late.
Pi tomorrow, if I can drag myself out of bed at 05:30...
failing to respond to persistent nudging...
Many a mis-spent afternoon at the local arcade in my youth, thanks to this man.
R.I.P. Steve.
TILT!
Just give the old one...
An extra gig of RAM, and maybe upgrade it to a 64Gig SSD drive...
^_^
Re: Re: Re: More WTF....
Anyone plugging a laptop or mobile device charger into 3 Phase will be in for one hell of a shock...
Have you seen the size of a three phase plug?
Simple solution...
Allow for PINs longer than four digits. Better still, insist on them!
Cheques to the usual address please Mr. Banker.
I wonder if he's still in NZ?
Or already on a slooow boat to China. ;o)
My first impression...
Was of a fallen over flower in a pot...
Just me then?

Gotta cover all the bases, eh chaps?
If it hurts, don't poke it!
