Re: Slight problem with the concept?

Good point, although the review didn't mention those connectors, I had to look on their website to see that. Isn't the USB connector just there for (from the sounds of it, much needed) software updates?

Trying to find that out, I ran into this, information on a software update which means you no longer need to use an ethernet cable to switch networks and it also now remembers previous wifi networks. http://bogo.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5814

Tony Chandler

Slight problem with the concept?

Not just this particular speaker, but the whole idea of an AirPlay portable speaker is flawed, surely?

If it's portable and rechargable, you want to take it with you, but without a wifi network you can't use it. So you can't use this in a park or on a beach, or even at the end of your garden if your wifi doesn't reach there? And with this particular one, you'd need to take an ethernet cable with you if you wanted to use it at a friends barbeque...

If it had Bluetooth as well it would be the best of both worlds.

Re: Egypt plans to impose a ban on internet pornography

Bureaucrat: "Well, I've been surfing the net for porn non-stop for weeks and now I can't see any anymore."

Boss: "You mean it's gone, the anti-porn crusade has been a success?"

Bureaucrat: "No, it's still there, I just can't see anymore."

Tony Chandler

Smut suppression?

Let's crank the alliteration up a notch or two:

"Egypt evaluates eradication of erotic electronic entertainment"

Re: Like that other thermal wonder...

I would suggest that if you are likely to go biting into an iPad then the temperature of said iPad is pretty much the least of your worries.

Tony Chandler

Re: Little Lewis Hamilton

It's an advantage, being small, if you are a car jockey.

Tony Chandler

Price?

Wouldn't you be better of buying one of those cheap PAYG Android phones, like the Orange San Francisco for about £100? I suppose you'd also need a HDMI cable, but that's only another tenner.

Tony Chandler

Three weeks without internet?

Imagine if that happened here in the UK.

It'd be a disaster, productivity would be through the roof.

Tony Chandler

Damnit!

Looks like they got my letter about making X-Ray clothing for girls, but I don't think they quite understood *exactly* what I was getting at.

Tony Chandler

I wonder

"Shenzhen-based Proview, which registered the “IPAD” trademark way back in 2001."

2001 was the year of the first ever iPod. I wonder which was registered first, Proview's iPad or Apple's iPod?

Anyone know how to find out?

Tony Chandler

Whereas I'm with you in that I can't see the point of Apple making an actual TV, the article does refer to voice control and video chatting, neither of which you can currently do with the AppleTV box thanks to it not having a camera or microphone.

Tony Chandler

Not ideal for driving...

...as it sounds like your goggles would blank out the bright blue motorway signs.

Could be handy for those sunny days when you can't see the speedo easily, though, if the HUD could display your speed.

Tony Chandler

Eh?

Xbox is actually a pretty tremendous example of Microsoft doing exactly what the original poster was suggesting they do with this.

They've managed to create a well known brand "Xbox" which stands on its own without any preconceptions or baggage left over from other products - you won't see the word Microsoft anywhere on the packaging for an Xbox apart from in the small print.

Tony Chandler

I've heard the PS3 version of Skyrim is just as bad (if not worse) so I think you're blaming the wrong people there!

Tony Chandler

When...

...did teenagers start using Blackberrys?

What on Earth is going to replace the trousers-hanging-around-the-arse fashion - pin stripe suits, bowler hats and umbrellas?

Tony Chandler

Well...

...that's the first time I've ever read any of the actual words from Playboy magazine.

Tony Chandler

As a teenager...

...I quite frequently used to make myself feel good by "choking it".

Tony Chandler

Hmmm

"Apple closed its flagship store in Beijing after frustrated fanbois rioted and pelted the windows with eggs when they were told the shop didn't have the iPhone 4S."

The other articles I read about this did not claim that the reason the fighting started was because the store did not have the phone, it was simply overcrowding.

Who to believe?

Tony Chandler

In-app fee

I read somewhere else that OnLive were getting around the 30% (not 33%) fee on in-app purchases in the same way Amazon's Kindle app does. ie. You can only make purchases from the website, and not in the app.

So whatever the problem is it probably isn't that.

Tony Chandler

iOS synching?

I was under the impression that iOS only syncs anything of a substantial size to the cloud (photos etc.) when you are connected to a wifi network? I thought it was only small things like contacts, calendars and notes that are synched over 3G.

Anyone know if this is true?

Tony Chandler

Yeah, but no but...

"If you genuinely believe they have provided this service altruistically thats great but I have yet to find a company that hands over data centre space and processing power from the goodness of its heart, have you?"

I don't believe they've done it out of the goodness of their heart, no.

It seems far more likely that they've done it to sell iDevices rather than to steal information, though.

Tony Chandler

"so you would be looking for some sort of mini black hole that sucked light away"

Congratulations, you've just invented ODED (Organic Darkness-Emitting Diodes) displays.

Tony Chandler

Looks amazing.

I fear the price, though. I suspect it will cost, to quote Dr Evil:

"One... Million... Dollars!!"

Tony Chandler

Wrong market?

All the comments so far are obviously from people who are very into their photography. I bought an NEX-5 and use it primarily as a point and shoot camera, and the shots it takes are simply fantastic compared to all the compact cameras I had before.

I think rookies like me who don't use the advanced settings very much, but still want good pictures, are exactly who Sony are aiming at with this one.

Tony Chandler

Other people...

...have already mentioned the fact that iOS5 allows you to use the volume up button as a shutter buton, but even before that there was a slightly better way.

Simply put your finger on the on-screen shutter button, then release it when you are ready to take the shot, rather than tapping it and shaking the phone.

Tony Chandler

It took me...

...a minute or so to find the solution to your problem re: switching it off.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3176

Hold down the Select button for five seconds. Pretty sure that works on scrollwheel iPods too.

Tony Chandler

Partly agree

Personally I thought the list was chock full of great games, but leaving out the magnificence of Pixeljunk Eden is unforgivable in my book. It's my favourite downloadable game on PS3 by a huge margin.

Tony Chandler

All this reminds me...

...of a fantastic joke from Futurama, when the ship is being dragged underwater by a giant fish and starts to creak under the pressure.

Professor Hubert Farnsworth: Good Lord! That's over 5000 atmospheres of pressure!

Fry: How many atmospheres can the ship withstand?

Professor Hubert Farnsworth: Well, it's a spaceship, so I'd say anywhere between zero and one.

Tony Chandler

As much as I like using my 360...

...I do wish Microsoft would stop changing its UI all the time.

Tweak it, improve it, speed it up, sure, but enough with the constant overhauls!

Tony Chandler

I imagine a lot of people would answer the phone during sex...

...but only if it was their wife calling.

Tony Chandler

Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> Auto-Correction -> OFF

See subject...

Tony Chandler

What?

Reason? On El Reg's comment boards?

I think I need a sit down.

Tony Chandler

Never forget the Wii

Every time I see the WiiU I just think it looks like a terrible, terrible idea for a console. But, everyone said the same about the Wii.

Using the same logic, I predict this will sell billions.

Tony Chandler

Penny Arcade summed this up...

...with their "Greater Internet F*ckwad Theory" strip.

I'm sure Uncharted 3...

....will sell very well indeed, but you won't be able to directly compare the sales figures as Battlefield 3 is out on both major consoles and the PC, unlike the PS3 exclusive title.

Tony Chandler

Despite all the Sony bashing...

....this has been going on for quite some time, and it isn't a Sony invention. I've got a PS3 and an a Xbox 360 and I've run into far more games that use an online pass system on the Xbox 360 than I have for the PS3.

Tony Chandler

Is it just me...

...or is anyone else really wanting them to move it from dangling off the edge so it doesn't fall?

I hate that.

Tony Chandler

However...

...there are also a lot of people who can't work during the day. Think people looking after small children while their other half is at work in a 9-5 job.

Maybe an evening job delivering packages is exactly what they are looking for?

Tony Chandler

HDNL

From my experiences with HDNL, I have no confidence that they would even be able to find the Amazon lockers. In fact, I doubt they could find their arse with both hands.

Tony Chandler

If I understand this right...

...The Village People are footing most of the bill for these bailouts?

Tony Chandler

Ho ho...

"this is an outrageous copy of the Samsung F700 from Feb2007 with its rounded metal edges and all black frontage."

Wikipedia:

"The first iPhone was unveiled by former Apple CEO Steve Jobs on January 9, 2007"

Tony Chandler

Does anyone know...

...how much real, paper newspapers are sold to retailers for, compared to their face value?

I'm just wondering how bad a deal this 30% is or isn't.

Tony Chandler

Assumptions ahead, but it seems simple.

"What we don't know yet is how Apple plans to manage the tunes on your Mac, PC, or iOS device. Will they automatically go into the iTunes Library? Will they wait in some flushable cache that, as it fills to a predetermined – user determined? – point, will trigger an "I'm getting stuffed" alert?"

I'm assuming, in typical Apple fashion, you'll never see the word "cache" in their UI.

It will probably just download into an unseen cache, and from the users point of view they are simply clicking to play a song or album from iCloud, and won't know if it is being downloaded on the fly or if it is already in the cache. The cache will delete content that hasn't been used in a while if it gets full, without telling the user.

Tony Chandler

Have you forgotten Ive?

Surely if you think their industrial design is the key, then Jony Ive is the man to thank?

After all, he is their Senior Vice President of Industrial Design.

Tony Chandler

Eh?

"There's talk of porting a version of Android to the slabs to make them more useable."

From the reviews I thought the best thing about the Touchpad was the WebOS software, but the hardware let it down a bit?

I suppose if you want apps, Android might be your only hope, though.

Tony Chandler

I assume he wasn't MS support

Lady: "Help! I'm having trouble with this canal!"

Microsoft support: "OK. Have you tried getting out and then getting back in again?"

Tony Chandler

Worst example I heard

I was at one of the small London stations where you have just two railway lines alongside each other and a platform on either side. I could hear this guys music emanating from his headphones quite clearly from the opposite platform - it was pretty staggering.

Tony Chandler

You can see why he's rich

The guy wants £35,000, but he offers just £25,000 (to someone else) to make him go away.

A saving of £10,000.

Tony Chandler

If you want a numeric keypad...

...and you want a Mac, you simply select the non-Bluetooth keyboard (that comes with a numeric keypad and two USB ports) at the time of purchase. Simple.
