Re: metacritic bonuses

It's pretty common but not common to talk about it.

WTF?

And Microsoft's new social website wants me to log in with Facebook... Derp?

Re: LEGO

Informal survey around the office says "Legos." We have a lot of the little bricks here, mostly Star Wars sets.

Re: How do you tax foreign nationals?

The tax in question is on US based income. The US already taxes capital gains like dividends and interest of foreign nationals that is earned in the US.

Competitive?

"The agency model is the one that offers consumers the prospect of an open and competitive market for e-books"

How is a market competitive if they're all selling the same thing for the same price?

I used to work in the same building as Newt

Right after he left congress. I'd bump into him in the elevator or on the way to the lunch counter. He just exuded this aura of disgust. I don't think we're in any danger of him being elected and trying to seize the moon in the name of 'merica.

Deadlock Victim

Easy to get around...

Every retailer who cares to keep up with it just gives a "cash discount". As long as the posted price is the credit price or the credit price is posted first, it's a perfectly acceptable alternative to visa/mc.

Deadlock Victim

Innodb? Popular?

It's not the most popular transactional engine for MySQL. It's the only one that's production ready.

Easily affordable by most any middle class American

Just take out a mortgage to pay for it. Not that you ever have any intent in paying the mortgage back, what with the end of the world and all...

This has been said a thousand times..

"I was running Firefox 3.6 and last night I clicked to open up a page on ThePirateBay and got immediately rooted."

But, I'd call that poetic justice.

"Regarding burqas and the like, Jarvis protested: 'I was just standing up for my beliefs. Muslims can walk around in whatever religious gear they like, so why can't I?'"

Because Islam is a real religion.

How about no...

NASA can have more money once every US citizen has health care.

Buzz is just too damn creepy

A link and an icon show up in Gmail one day. I click it. I notice that I somehow already have 6 people following me. Preemptive stalking? Lolwut?

Not so much with the radio...

"So are they also going to give up on radio as well? Idiots they have just given up on selling to the next generation of music listeners."

Radio is not the equivalent of streaming Internet music in most cases. Spotify lets you listen to what you want, when you want it, correct? No radio station on Earth works like that.

I live in RTP...

...within walking distance of the IBM compound. No kidding, it's a compound. A good portion of it is behind a razor wire fence, guarded by armed security. It makes perfect sense for IBM to build here. Laws are very business friendly and they already have something like 11,000 employees here.

As for power, most of RTP is hooked up to Duke or Progress Energy, both of whom operate nuclear plants in the area.

It can do OLTP clustering. Of course, IBM seems to have forgotten about Informix...

Holy shit! If my webserver is insecure and vulnerable, there's a bug that will make it insecure and vulnerable. Stop the presses! This is the exact same sort of issue as the SQL Server slammer "worm" which required a blank administrator password in order to propagate...

Don't be stupid

"Now tell me, is taxation moral"

Yes. Yes it is. Paying taxes is a moral obligation. If you don't want to pay taxes, you're (usually) free to move elsewhere.

Post your own message

Brilliant. They'd need to add a third comment for the browser wars though. Something like "Blah Opera, blah blah Jesus blah blah independent blah blah irrelevant."

Prudes

You have to remember that the US was founded by uptight Protestants who were so uptight that they had to leave their homes and go to "The New World" to practice their uptightness. These same Uptight Protestants used guns to "defend" themselves from the local wildlife and native population. Assault rifles? Yes! Boobs? Hell no, that's immoral.

Change the law...

If you don't want foreign judgments to be enforceable in the UK at all, maybe you should change the law instead of bitching about people trying to enforce their (perceived) rights.

Deadlock Victim
WTF?

Re: airbus...

"You mean they didn't? How many of those has been sold into US?"

From the Airbus North America website:

"Customers in North America have ordered more than 2,600 Airbus aircraft - with more than 2,000 of these having been delivered by April 2009. United Airlines, US Airways and Northwest currently operate the largest Airbus fleets among the company's more than 35 airline customers in the region."

In fact the A320 line and various Embrarer (Brazil) aircraft are the most popular choices among smaller, regional carriers here in the US. Boeing is really lacking in that capacity. Just yesterday, United Airlines bought 25 aircraft from Boeing and 25 from Airbus.

"As far we know, the US (governement) won't buy anything with open competition, but asks for offers from selected vendors. Which happen to be US corporations."

I would rather hope that the US government would give preference to US corporations when bidding out for procurement and other contracts.

Deadlock Victim
WTF?

Destroying lives forever?

"The real enemi of the USA is not Terrorists, it is the MPAA/RIAA working hard every day to DESTROY AND RUINE lifes for ever.

i wonder what was her price to render such a flawed verdict that destroy the life of young person forevere?"

That's one of the dumber things I've heard online. The guy can just file for bankruptcy and never pay the RIAA a cent. Seven years later and that bankruptcy will fall off his credit report and it'll be as if it never happened.

Deadlock Victim

The title is required, and must contain letters and/or digits.

"Typical yank who seems to think that him filing a lawsuit in A DIFFERENT FARKING COUNTRY can stop something happening in another."

That sort of goes towards that whole "nutjob" thing, wouldn't you say? I'd say the typical yank wouldn't know where Switzerland *is* let alone how to interact with their legal system.

Effects on competition? HAH!

"Commission's statement of objections over its ownership of MySQL and the potential impact it might have on competition."

MySQL being owned by Oracle will have exactly zero effect on competition. They are not *in* competition with one another. They aren't even in the same class. That's like regulators worrying about the effects of competition if Aston Martin were to buy a golf cart manufacturer.

Deadlock Victim

Firefox's contribution

"REmind me again, what firefox has contributed to the whole Browser thing, except buggyness, and bloat."

They've gotten a lot of users to realize that IE is not the only choice for browsing the Web. That's a pretty significant contribution.

re: What happens if...

"What if I'm in the middle of some electrically-powered medical process, like, say, I live in an iron lung? And the Powers That Be decide to limit my electricity usage for a while?"

Because that's not how "smart" meters work. The meter asks a smart device to turn itself off (or otherwise reduce power). The capability has to be built into your appliance/device. I don't see anyone building an iron lung with this sort of power management capability...

blarg

I'm sure Catholics would very much like to slam the model in that poster.

Deadlock Victim

Not justified my ass

1) Wife calls police, says husband threatened her with gun

2) Police arrive, husband brandishes gun

3) Police say "put the gun down", husband does not

4) Police shoot husband after several "put the gun down" warnings.

The non-fatal resolution is for the husband to put his damn gun down like the police ordered him to repeatedly. There is no backing off and leaving the house to let everyone "calm down" when you have an armed suspect. The imminent danger is the lunatic on the other side of the wall with the handgun.

Of course shooting a man isn't just fine. It's a tragic event that should never happen. But what the hell are the cops supposed to do? They can't just leave an armed suspect and let him do something worse than he's already done.

It's ok, we still love you. Next time you come for a visit, could you bring more babies? They were delicious.

I bought my last console...

I bought my last console not for the various online extras it provides but the number and quality of games available for it. (let's face it, in the early days of the PS3, the xbox 360 was already mature and had plenty of titles available) i.e.: I will never buy a Wii.

It'd be nice if Microsoft made the various video services available for free, but I'm not about to buy a PS3 because of it. (and I'm not going to fork over the money for Xbox Live)

And of course, El Reg forgot to mention, "Last month, Microsoft even went so far as to ban what's been estimated to be several thousands of users from Xbox Live network for modifying their Xbox 360 consoles" so that they could steal games.

Deadlock Victim

It's a sham, but...

Google is just doing this so it looks "nicer" to the various government regulators that are taking a long look at the power it holds.

Deadlock Victim

Pre-load Snow Leopard?

"I just wonder how much better the Mac OS would do if Apple actively sought out HP, DELL, ACER and others to pre-load Snow Leopard?"

Why in the world would they do that? Apple makes money on the hardware, not the software. Mac fans are going to buy a Mac regardless of the applications. Apple is already ridiculously profitable, why screw it up?

Deadlock Victim
