I tried the win 8 CP and oh my god what a god awful OS I reinstalled after the day back to windows 7 deleted the image and snapped the dvd I burned of it. Its so bad I wouldn't even pirate it, if it comes on a new pc/laptop I get the first thing I will do is format and reinstall (I wouldn't even let it boot once). Im not alone in the MS I hope you learn the lesson come windows 9 because 8 is already failed.

Drefsab

I hope devs ignore this and destroy this abomination of an OS. Its so bad I won't even pirate it. Lets hope MS listen and stick to the usual pattern of good os bad os etc.

Drefsab

This is giving the customer what they want, its no different than what a lot of people do with PVR's they record the live program and skip forward through the ad's because we dont want them dont pay attention to them and dont want them.

Drefsab
Thumb Down

hmm

I love how they say they want to record the details of the communications ok so person a emails mail box b that sits outside of the UK where the spooks cant touch it. No big deal its a single email.

But what's not seen is the mail box B has forwarders onto mailbox C in another safe haven which in turn has forwarders onto all the undesirables that GCHQ want to know if people are contacting.

So from their point of view person A is doing nothing suspect at all but all the stuff they want to capture is beyond their reach.

I don't see this bill helping law enforcement agencies half as much as some people would have you believe, maybe a few stupid petty crooks may fall foul of it, same way they would with phone tapping etc. But in the mean time is a major cost and expense to the ISP industry and treads all over our civil liberties.

Time to send lots of random lol cat pictures with encrypted stenography messages in saying F U GCHQ.

I for one hope they go the same way of the certain other company with three letters in its name, true to sue so much that they end up going bankrupt because their case never gets won.

Drefsab

wonder if they will block it by simply blocking DNS requests :) its going to be simple to get around anyway so may as well make it simple to implement as well as to get around. Complies with the order with minimal fuss and anyone wanting to get around it can very quickly.

No flash suck, I have an ICS android phone and tried this its a decent browser and id use it if it wasnt for flash, google say its because adobe wont support it but do they really need to? Other 3rd party browsers have flash support (Dolphin HD for example).

Until it supports flash (or every site that uses flash switchs to HTML5) I wont be using it as a main browser.

Drefsab

the daft thing is this story is totally believable, I could see apple doing just this if they thought for a second they could get away with it.

Drefsab

Thats ok :)

Just give any spys/international reporters/government undesirables a HTC android phone :P

Drefsab

hmm gov take my number

I need a new job, 80k plus 32k a year to build what is really a simple site, ok sure you need to make sure it stands up security wise but any half way decent web developer could build that for a fraction of the cost.

So then your down to the hosting and maintenance, I certainly could host a sufficiently hi-spec dedicated server, with full resilience, high bandwidth, DDoS mitigation optional offload into cloud should the need ever arise. All that and still have a VERY healthy profit margin on this. Sure this was a small project but if you look at the costing to do it there's so much room for saving while still giving good money to those doing the work. It makes me shudder to think what amount of waste is on the bigger projects.

Still if they need something like this doing id be happy to do it, it would work as expected, be delivered quicker and be more reliable plus it would set me up to the point I might actually be able to afford a house in this housing market in the UK.

I hope this sticks with in the bounds of court order needed for all cased and it has to be a criminal matter. It shouldn't be some forum where a user posted a link to by something illegal (after all the sites not illegal its the user thats posted objectionable content).

It also has to be very clear on it being criminal only, I could see certain groups trying to abuse this for civil matters, oh block that site they have a link to something we think is copyrighted (then suspended without any investigation or change for the site to disprove the claims). Could you imagine if the patent wars got mixed up in this apple trying to get samsungs website taken down and visa-versa it would be a right mess.

No hack my arse

I had a notification that someone tried to by points on my xbox live account. Thankfully the payment failed as the card linked to the account had expired. I've not used the account in year, it has a separate username and password to others I use online, I never provide those details to any other place so it wasn't phished etc.

I tried to report it to microsoft and they just didnt give a damn or care, the few times I managed to get my email read by a person or speak to a human on the phone their response was basically well your card was declined so whats the problem, do you want to give upto date card details... hell no. At no point did they want to look into who had tried to buy stuff on my account, god forbid they try and track down those trying to steal from and most likely other customers.

Just one more reason I dont and wont use xbox live.

Wow so all this fuss to create an app lets you access something the perfectly functional web browser on the same device does? Is this just another case of people trying to make apps for things that they can do just as well if not better in the browser?

Apple seeks new marketing boss after iPhone loss stunt is pulled again

There I fixed it for you, marketing cant be bothered thinking of a new PR stunt for the new revision of the Jesus/Zombie phone.

The title is required, and must contain letters and/or digits.

lol I find this funny I do mining and I know exactly how loud my gfx cards fan gets when working on it, if my gfx card was doing that for no reason id damned well know about it and so would most people who have these kinds of gfx cards.

Drefsab

wrong man?

its highly possible they have the wrong man, people say chat logs can be doctored which is a fair point, but what about the youtube clips if that person is who they really are after that will clearly show the guy they have arrested is not the same person.

The question really comes down to what has the person they have arrested actually done that's pointed the police at him, Im betting hes not part of Lulzsec but it doesn't mean he is a saint either.

lol at the patents

having read the patents in question they are so broad and vague they could almost be used to describe any client server interaction with a customer interactions via a UI.

Patents like this need to invalidated, come back when you have an actual product or invention, not some vague wording that can be twisted to describe many things that existed long before the patents were put in place. Stop killing innovation and making it hard for people actually producing something out there when all you do is sit on your hands producing nothing.

Just one more reason why I wont be buying any apple products. I love how so many people get all up in arms defending apple claiming people are ripping apple off on the design of the phone and features.

Touch screen and smart phone have been around for ages, hell apple weren't even the first to put the letter i at the beginning of the name. the iPaq (made by HTC) was out years before the iPhone, so many touchscreen devices made by HTC and other companies looked like the iphone before the iphone existed.

Having the UI of a grid of icon's, is something operating systems have been doing for years, why is it something special when the same UI eliments are found in a phone OS? But then again phone OS's have been doing it before the iphone did that as well.

Don't get me wrong apple may have had some innovation im not aware of but the key points and features people keep coming up with were done be other people before apple so from what I see they are ripping other people off. Maybe apple were the first ones to get patents against certain obvious and commonly used things but that just shows that patents are badly flawed. Just look at the patent on the app store thing, programs and applications have been called app's for years, a place to buy them has been called stores, shops, markets etc. Its to obvious to patent but it doesn't stop people trying to.

The only person that really suffers is the consumer, all that money apple are spending in lawsuits they could have put into bringing forward the release of the next model of phone and possibly being able to compete spec wise with other devices, or they could QA test their new devices so we don't see things like loss of signal because your holding it wrong issues of the last generation.

Currently with the patents they have its almost likely that both companies are infringing on each other, I would laugh my ass off if some judge decided to hell with it your both infringing on each other neither of you can sell your phones or tablets, that would serve the US market right for allowing this patent mess to get so bad in the first place.

Drefsab

hmm

What I suspect its happening is the deep packet inspection that happening to identify what traffic is doing what and then apply traffic shaping to p2p traffic is identifying the packets used by CoD as p2p traffic.

I would expect this is because of some recent change in the games client server code probably for security/performance improvements. I've seen VM's DPI identify anything thats encrypted as p2p if its goes over ports other than 25 and 443 etc.

What would be interesting is if someone could host a game on port 443 then have people connect on it, and see how things are, though im not sure they can do that on the xbox version of the game.

Drefsab

lies

A quick hope over to the desire development section of XDA forums on the first page alone I foud

RCMix S v2.0 / Gingerbread sense2.1+3 Combo

LeeDrOiD V3.0.7 / Gingerbread + Sense

SuperNova GingerBread Sense

Cool Kingdom v6a / Gingerbread + Sense 3

At that point I stopped, so gingerbread and sense cant work funny how many roms there are doing just that with MANY happy users of them, personally im using MIUI but come on HTC, don't lie to your customers.

I wonder what the reaction of the sites that are perfectly legitimate will be, if I ran a business something like yousendit.com and was blacklisted and basically accused of piracy I wonder of someone may choose to see that as liable/slander as they are basically accusing the valid actions of unlawful acts.

Drefsab

wow

who would have thought it people dont give a damn about buying something there is little to no content for, you have to pay £200 for a pair of glasses to watch it, and just isnt all that good when you using it.

People want to be able to sit down and chill out in front of the tv, they dont want to mess about with 3D glasses, they want to be able to have friends and family over and still watch stuff without farting about.

3D is just a fad its never been done really well and as long as you need glasses like that it will never be a major driver.

Drefsab

hmmm

I wonder how it works, if it use the network then it would be simple enough to set a firewall that blocks and logs it to see what its doing. If its using 3g then its going to need some form of sim card which can be removed.

Plus what happens when someone is using say linux surely this device to capture the mentioned information would have to interface with the OS on some level.

Drefsab

odd

also their website mentions nothing about any hardware device, it sounds far more like a software package installed on-top of the operating system (ie childs play to remove).

I guess this shows that the witch advice is for the little old grannies who are not quite as IT savy as the rest of the world. I've had a hotmail account from back in the days before microsoft bought them out, I also have a gmail account and its the gmail that I use by preference as its by far the better service.

Drefsab

lol

The PSN SEO hack was not part of any of the anon planned operations, you only have to have been keeping an eye on 4chan or anonops etc to see that at no point was it any concerted effort for this kind of thing.

Is it possible that some skilled hacker seeing the DDoS decided he would do his own thing, sure. Is it possible that this random hacker decided hey I wont put my name to it I will claim to be anonymous again sure. Anyone can claim to be part of anonymous buy simply deciding at that moment to be part of it.

Is it possible that they have no connection at all with anonymous, well again sure because there are plenty black hat groups or individual hackers out there. This person could well have decided he was working as part of Anonymous and left that file or he could have created it to throw the attention onto them just as easily.

Is it really so far fetched to think that sony pissed off the global hacker community by their heavy handed treatment of graf_chokolo geohot and fail0verflow? Is it such a surprise that when you piss a lot of hackers off bad things happen from multiple fronts?

Is it also hard to think about the fact just before all this happened over 200 of sony's online service staff were given the boot? Come into work one day to find a 2 week notice saying thanks but your about to be unemployed. These people armed with not only detailed insider knowledge but access to the compromised systems could easily have been a major factor even if it was only in divulging certain information.

Sony's actions incurred a lot of illwill from hackers and their online services staff, my hart truely bleed for them that they got bitten over it.

Drefsab
WTF?

hmmm

I wonder just how many of those downloads was because the people using lime wire got infect with some kind of virus and ended up having to reinstall their system. I love though how downloading the application itself somehow means you used it to download copyrighted material, sure we all know a lot of people did but then so did a lot of people using FTP clients, we dont see them going after cuteftp. I remember the days people used email to share their copyrighted files, and websites with direct HTTP downloads, does that mean microsoft and netscape should be sued as well?

Drefsab

lol

Im wondering just what they will find if would be funny if this was protected using a decent encryption system it takes massive effort and time to break then when the finally get it they find its just a video if osama saying to kiss his ass or something. If the guy spent that much time avoiding leaving digital footprints he probably wouldnt even use the computer for anything important.

Then again he could just have been that dumb it there's a good chance there's nothing to find.

Whats the bet that they are using something like AES encryption one of the best out there using a 256bit key it would take upto 50,955,671,114,250,100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years to brute force it using a system that was trying 2^56 permutations per second. Obviously a key may found within that time. Given that AES 256 is considered military grade and used by companies like Microsoft.

Theoretically AES could be used with larger keys though that would take a good programmer to write that but anyone saying that there aren't programmers among the terrorists is delusional.

Id love to see keys of that strength broken be brute force, or if a decent attack can be found that would be a great step for cryptography breaking the most used common standard :)

Drefsab

lol

well seeing as all SOE services are offline as well (http://maintenance.station.sony.com/) which means any SOE MMO for example is offline, things like everquest 1 and 2, DC universe, starwars etc loads of them, seams to be a lot more than just PSN.

So the people would have been perfectly happy if it wasn't for google? So it takes someone like that to cause a revolution? Well its good job that googles a new thing otherwise history would be dotted with people kicking tyrants and despots out, wait there.... :)

Product manager fail

I really would love to know who the product manager is for their broadband and sit down and have a little chat with him, sure they may have a market for the fisher price broadband, hide all the options keep the numpties from breaking it, but their 50mbit flagship product is going to attract people who actually know how to use their pc's as well they will want basic functionality.

Don't support it, thats fine we will figure it out, just don't put up road blocks.

Its band enough that they force you into using their branded hardware when any cable modem that supports the euro DOCSIS 3 standard technically could work fine on the network.

Im running 3.55 custom firmware and on PSN right now, just use one of the proxies that basically reports back to PSN that your on 3.56 when you really on 3.55 and your in.

Drefsab

meh

Just patch the iso with SSv3 and burn again oh and as long as your drives on the latest firmware your back on again. People are cheating on cod without backups.

Drefsab

hmm

I wonder, the biggest problem I see with this is Amazon will not know if a mail is unsolicited or not, sure it may advertise a valid service, sure it may not have an opt-out link, but does that mean the poor person getting the mail opted in to be begin with? I think not.

Personally I will be looking forward to finding the IP ranges used on this and making all servers I host place a high spam score if the mail comes from those IP's.

Drefsab

I can see her point

I have one of these for my daughter, and the first time it came on in a noisy room I thought that's what it said as well, however when I made it play again I could clearly hear it saying bark just with an accent. I didn't storm off and complain, if I was that bothered I would just connect the toy to my laptop and alter the song playlist to skip that song.

To be fair what I would love from this toy is the ability to put my own song's on there, ive tried accessing it but the mass storage device comes up but I cant figure out what the file system they are using is.

Drefsab

lol

I wonder what the real figure is because on my htc phone I have a hosts file that blocks ad's, works really well, and as its a custom rom loads of people running the same rom have the same thing.

The other thing it wont show is people running android on their iphone :)

Drefsab

small step in the right direction

Well its nice to see a small move into the correct direction, the thing is DRM doesn't stop piracy the pirates go oh thats a nice DRM you have there *rip* *crack* oh look im playing the new title all copied. The paying customers then are lumbered with the restriction's, compatibility issues, degraded performance all for what? Nothing as the pirates are still playing the game. It serves nothing more than to punish your paying customers.

The thing is look at MMO's or games that have a strong online element but require a CD key to use the online features, they do better than the single player games with weak online features and stupidly strong DRM.

It was the same when spore came out I bought it couldn't play it and was told get a crack, well to hell with that I took the game back got a refund and then downloaded a pirate copy played it and then deleted it, I've now no longer bought games with any major form of DRM since, and I've stuck to using things like steam rather than retail (have to love this xmas's sale)

Drefsab

agghh

this is what winds me up 500mb of data from face book is the same as 500mb of data from youtube, its still 500mb of data no matter where it came from and I shouldn't be paying a different rate depending on how my ISP feels about the site im accessing.

Sure if you boil down to it peering agreements can mean different rates for transit but that's not really website specific, make sure you have good peering and alternate routes to hand and have a nice flat rate per MB of transit and then charge enough to make a reasonable margin on that. Oh look you now have a sustainable business model that means you make money the more MB everyone uses (unless you do something stupid like say its unlimited for a flat rate.... oh wait.....).

Drefsab

meh

I think they should just release the source code to the BOT and give a big FU to Blizzard and this ruling, not allowed to sell it sure no problem I wont sell it :)

Im not saying I agree with the botters ether but I personally think they should be going after the people running the bot instead of the bot itself. Also look at what it is about your game that makes people thing I really want to pay money to someone else to do this part for me. The way I see if if part of the game is that bad people will give other people money to do it for them then it needs work.

Drefsab

hmm

I wonder how much of this is just because most web host are scared to touch them or take their buisness, who would want to host a site thats subject to such negative things as DDoS attacks and possible political/legal proceedings form the USA.

They have looked at hosting with OVH but OVH wouldnt accept them without legal advice which it seams has been hard to get and even then they have been advised to not touch them (source: http://forum.kimsufi.co.uk/showthread.php?t=889). If you cant get hosting any place but the blackhat ISP's then thats the place your sites going to live.

Drefsab

aggghhh!

I pay my telco for my access and bandwidth and I damned well expect my monthly fee's to cover the cost of what I use, im the one that goes and watchs a youtube video, or uses google etc. These content providers are not forcing me to go use their stuff I choose to, they are paying for their bandwidth to server anyone that request's data from there servers, they should not be extorted by companies trying to make them pay twice to carry data their customers have paid them to carry.

If they are charging to little to keep up with customer demand then that's their sodding problem, charge more. If my mobile provider turned around and said look we are sorry it costs x £ per GB so we are setting a price of x for this set amount of bandwidth and x per additional gig id pay for it. Don't sell me unlimited or set high AUP's and expect them to be hardly used people will use what they pay for. Sell it responsibly with clear pricing and stop trying to extort money from those that don't owe you a penny.

I'd happy cancel my mobile contract with any company that tries to extract payment from content providers and switch to one that charges more but doesn't try this rubbish.

Drefsab

seriously disappointed

I love the Nexus one its a great phone however im now looking at whats next, and aparently its a phone with the same speed cpu, same ram, same res screen (though slightly bigger display), same quality camera, same wifi speed (wireless n on the nexus one and desires been available for ages).

All in all apart from the only advantages of the upgrade would be having slightly more internal storage (not a problem because I use a large SD card anyways), slightly larger screen which is a nice addition, and the updated OS that will be available on my phone anyway.

Thanks but no thanks I will keep what I have and wait for something worth getting, maybe the rumored Galaxy 2.

Drefsab

meh

The problem is their prices, I went in there the other day and had a look at a newly redone store, they had graphics cards 2 generations behind the one I just bought last week for over twice the price I paid for my new card.

Everything was significantly higher priced than what I could get when buying online so is it hardly surprising that more and more people are doing just that?

Drefsab
FAIL

meh a title

This is just one of the many reasons why I dropped O2 and I will drop any company that tries this kind of stuff. I pay for access to the internet not a limited subset that you like or pays what in my eyes amounts to a bribe.

I already paying for a set amount of GB per month (lets not get onto the fact that set amount is advertised as unlimited, the maximum allowed in the AUP is the actual limit and what I go off). I expect to be able to use that many GB each month on anything on the internet if I choose to.

1GB of data is the same amount of data no matter where it comes from, no matter if its Iplayer or downloads from and app store. It still the same amount of bytes from the internet.

Add to that that the content providers already are paying for their upstream and thus paying for their content. As a customer my fee's are paying for the delivery of that content, if your undercharging then that's your own fault and your own flawed business model.

If you sell something at a price less than it costs to provide then you will loose money, many ISP's have gone bust for the same reason's. Ether increase your prices, cross subsidise from your other product's or crash and burn, ether option is fine by me, but trying to bribe content provides is just not acceptable.

I find this funny writing a device driver is hardly tampering, would you call using a 3rd party driver for your wireless card because the manufacturer doesn't put one out for windows 7 tampering? I certainly wouldn't.

Microsoft make money on the hardware they should have made windows drivers for all their hardware, but they seam to only be half arsed with it, for example they make drivers for the 360 usb and wireless pad, but they dont make ones for the chatpad you use with the same pad.

Its in microsoft's interest's to make things like this seamless and support from hardware from pc to xbox and visa versa but they are dropping the ball. The fact that people are putting up rewards for people to make 3rd party drivers just shows that people want them and MS are just failing to meet that demand. They can be as unhappy as they like but while they fail to meet customer demand things like that will happen.
