Europeans don't go swimming a lot with their mobile phones, no- however dropping the phone in the toilet is no. 4 on the insurance claim list for mobile damage in Ireland- and no. 5 in Germany.......... I don't even want to think about how/why people feel the need to mess with their phones on the bog..........
Its not fair to compare an AMD Fusion chip to an Atom or an Intel ULV part......
Ok- so the AMD based subnotebooks- are not 'Ultrabooks'- they are however very energy efficient, and have a DX 11 capable graphics APU, until the atrocious graphics that are integrated in Intel chips......
The AMD chips tend to run a good deal more slowly than their Intel counterparts- they have vastly superior graphics though- alongside a different approach (out of order instructions) than do their Atom counterparts.
The AMD Fusion APU- has a hell of a lot more in common with a Cortex A9, than it does an Intel Atom chip...........
We don't normally get storms as bad as this in Dublin- the lightening and torrential rain of the last 2 days has been startling at times........ Entire areas of the city were knocked off the grid some areas several times- which in this day and age is very unusual. I'm not altogether surprised that some high prominence systems fell over- you can build as much redundancy as you like into systems, but you will always encounter scenarios that you just don't plan for.........
I'd like to nominate my home as another venue for anyone who doesn't like to be bothered by cellphones. Its the ultimate signal deadspot- no tv or radio signals here either. I have to run my wireless network @ 80dBi to get coverage throughout the house- the whole area just seems to soak up signals (thankfully satellite and cable aren't affected). So- anyone looking for a cup of coffee in peace, give me a yell........
I suffered from a different error to the ones (above), namely a dreaded 'out of memory' error. Apparently (after some research) its well known to Microsoft- and the 'work-around' is to uninstall any additional language packs you may have installed. Not only is this troublesome- but the cryptic manner in which you have to find a solution, is annoying as hell......
I also had the hanging on update 124,556 of 300,000 (odd) updates on startup, and a myriad of other issues- that necessitated a fresh install......
Microsoft should be ashamed to have let this out the door- if we did similar with our software, we'd have our business users baying for our blood.......
We are not blitzed with cold calling like users in the states are- as there is a cost associated with outgoing calls. I don't understand what the issue is? While I accept that GV Connect is not a VOIP client in the strict understanding of what this entails, many European users do use VOIP clients on their mobile phones all the time.
Personally I use Mobile Skype, configured to activate in the presence of any of my preferred networks, and forwarding any inbound voice or video calls via 3G when out of range. I pay for the 3G leg of any incoming calls- to Skype, the mobile operator doesn't hit me, unless of course I'm outside of my home network, in which case I pay the termination fees (now capped at 59c a minute, or if you're lucky a one-time connection charge irrespective of how long the call is).
The big difference between the US and EU is in the states- the person receiving the call pays. In Europe- if you want to call someone, you pay. The EU model seems a lot fairer to me tbh- I don't have to screen my incoming calls to decide whether or not answering is going to cost me (financially).
We do have models based on hybrid Wifi-3G cellular for VOIP here- and have had for over 15 years though- so suggesting its primarily a US phenomena is a fallacy.
Au contraire, try another phone- you might be very surprised (at how much more feature advanced than an iPhone it is- alongside a vastly different build quality). I've certainly got a new phone on my Christmas wish list.......
I'm a UPC customer (largely because they are the only supplier of 30Mb connections in my neighbourhood). I don't pirate music- largely because I have any CDs I am interested in listening to- and I have zero interest in most of the output of the past 15 years- but I don't see why I should be held in thrall to the music industry....... Well done UPC for fighting against the unfair demands of the big 4- the other ISPs who rolled over were spineless in comparison.......
Next step- bring Irish law into line with European law.......

I've fond memories of ATI and Nvidia being caught out in turn optimising drivers specifically for various testing scenarios that bore no semblence to real world usage. My own pet hate was how some OEM manufacturers couldn't use the default ATI drivers- but needed their own modified versions- and if you ever needed to reinstall, it was a nightmare.......
Personally- I'd have more faith in the ATI brand than I would in the AMD brand- I've loved overclocking ever since the K6-2-500 days- but have some quite horrific memories of burnt out components. I have burnt out a few graphics cards in my time too- but normally a reboot into LKGC and resetting clock speeds- sorts a graphics issue (unless you've borked the card).
I'm not sure that I'd be too happy with the fully integrated chips they are now proposing- anyone who loves performance- will run a mile......?

Certainly the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 have been churning out some very decent content- but Skys action can only be described as an abuse of a dominant market position.

AirFrance recently 'securely destroyed' my luggage- because I had a round tin of shortbread in my checked-in bag, that could have been a bomb. For good measure- they gathered up the destroyed remains (complete with plenty of securely destroyed biscuit crumbs), packaged it up in a clear plastic bag with security seals, and put it back in the hold- without ever letting me know (the first I knew was when it came out on the baggage conveyor at the other end- along with all other luggage).
Someone seriously needs to say enough is enough- all this heavy handed treatment in the name of 'security' really is a load of bollocks. Next time I'm going to take the train.......
Yes- it certainly does sound like Nokiagame has been brought back to life! It was great fun- and there were lots of Nokia branded goodies for participants, which went a long way in many markets towards establishing Nokia as the premier phone brand (prior to that it was better known in much of Europe for Wellington Boots and other accessories, than electronics). Of course this was before Motorola got its act together and ate up market share from Nokia, Alcatel (haven't heard of them in a while!) and Ericsson (who despite incredible engineering- couldn't design properly, and those weird aerials!)

If you plonked a T9800 and an Intel 5300 wireless card in this- it would go like a bullet. Admittedly- thats another £200- but it would be well worth it.........?
Microsoft is kidding itself if it thinks its going to persuade enterprise users to shell out for yet more licences- particularly in the current economic climate.
I work in a large public organisation- we're still running Windows 2000 across over 90% of our desktops (several thousand), and are beginning to 'trial' Win XP....... When you're using all sorts of development environments- and need to make sure you don't break either your apps, or your development tools- you are sort of stuck. Locking down to a stable environment- even if its 10 years old, is not a bad idea. Win XP is pretty zippy on modern hardware :)
The fact that they're plumming for the U3500 processor (5 watts under full tilt), means this is aimed at those who need battery power- yet, it doesn't compare favourably (other than with its enhanced graphics) with the likes of the £600 Acer 5810T (almost identical or even better specs).
The Asus UX50V is a nice machine- its just about £400 too expensive, or should have the U9400 in lieu of the U3500 (and even then, I'd want another lump shaved off the price).
Me- I bought the Acer 5810T, and got a U9400 engineering sample for £70 on ebay. The only laptop out there with similar specs is a Sony @ £2600, versus my £670 upgrade.
Its not a temporary mechanism. The reason for the vast numbers of pre-orders for Windows 7 Ultimate- is purely to get hold of XP mode (assuming that the purchasers have also checked out their processors support VTx- and that its not hobbled in the BIOS like some manufacturers seem to routinely do).
I've placed a number of Pre-orders for W7U, and will be using XP mode from day one. I've no plans to purchase new apps down the road- as long as my current library of apps work- I've paid good money for licences, I've no intention of going out and replacing the whole lot (yet again). I'm far from unique.
At the moment I dual boot most machines with XP and Vista (and even triple boot a few with Ubuntu)- W7U is a far tidier solution- and is not a temporary solution in my eyes.
You shouldn't need an MCP/MCSE to run your home computer.
If you think Sony's response is inadequate- have a look at Acer/Gateway etc. Even top of the range laptops with x9100s/T9800s/T9600s have VTx disabled at a BIOS level. Thats also making an assumption that you can call that Insyde H2 Bios- a Bios at all.......
It should be relatively easy to rollout a BIOS flash that would enable VTx features (or at very least give the more tech savy customer the option of turning it on in the first instance..........
I've a rather nice 8930G paperweight- that is never going to run my legacy apps, unless I continue to dual boot (or triple boot) as I'm doing at present.
MS really needs to take the manufacturers to task on this........
If they really only allow certain markets a family licence- it will be give Ubuntu such a boost. People have put up with Vista crap for far too long- Windows 7 is simply what Vista *should* have been. Now we have a bewildering variety of Windows 7- with a bewildering variety of licence proposals for end users. Even Mac OS has only 3 options (and two of them are server varients). It really is a case of divide and conquer...... I got my pre-orders in, hope everyone else did too!
As a dual tuner PVR with DVB-T, its definitely of interest. The remote is actually attractive- I nearly got tossed out of a Sony shop at the weekend when I went around counting the number of buttons on their latest remote (46)....... Why companies imagine their remote controls have to resemble a prop from the original 60s series of Star trek is beyond me!!!
Its a bit rough and ready- a little bit of software tweaking would go a long way.
If I didn't already have the Western Digital Media Player- I'd be saving my hard earned cash for one of these- unfortunately the price tag is a bit too rich for my blood as is.......

A tenner for a 19" LCD panel..... Nice one if you need a new panel- I can't see there being a ready market for anyone hoping to make a quick buck reselling them thought...... 19" LCD panels are pretty much obsolete? If it was 22" or 24" widescreen panels- that would be a different story......
I do think its a bit much trying to browbeat Dell into honoring a genuine pricing error though- there is no consumer enforcement agency in Europe or the States who would dream of this. It does smack of opportunism on the part of the Taiwanese........
Acer have confirmed that the 8Gb SSD Linux model is due to be updated almost immediately- the initial launch is solely to use up stocks of the 8Gb SSDs. It is reported that the Linux model will be updated to a 160Gb HDD model. The other big plus- the Linux is Ubuntu 9.04! I'm going to wait a bit- and try to get a 160Gb Linux one in a few weeks time.
Asus- did not shoot themselves in the foot with their 'Its better with Windows' campaign- they shot themselves in the foot when they introduced Linux to the mass market as that Linpus crap on the original 701s. Many people who were willing to view Linux with a reasonably open mind- were exposed to one of the worst distros out there- when they could have spent a couple of weeks knocking together something that would have given Mac OS a run for its money. Thats where Asus shot themselves in the foot. The really bad problems particularly with wireless configuration in Linpus- meant the return rate on the original 701s were startlingly high in comparison to industry norms- and gave Asus a bad taste of what it considered consumer's preference to be........
FYI- I triple boot with Vista Ultimate 64 bit, XP 64bit, and Ubuntu 64 bit. I have no probs with any hardware in any of the operating systems (other than realtec codec probs in Vista- but thats a known problem). I even use Steam on Ubuntu for some limited gaming- because it saves having to kill a load of background applications. I've found the update feature of Ubuntu very helpful- and a lot more intuitive than Windows Update (my last update of device drivers for the aforementioned soundcard necessitated a restore to LKGC).
Its not black and white. If Linux machines are sold at a discount to Windows Machines- a la the way the Acer Revo have priced its range- there is a very good sustainable market for each operating system. Shovelling an operating system out the door- without thought to the underlying hardware and what consumers really want (or need), is fatal.
Who is going to pay £450 for a touch screen netbook, with a really awful processor and very low onboard storage? Perhaps the same question was asked of the 701- when it debuted- but at least it had price in its favour. At £450- I can get a very reasonable laptop- just why would I spend that sort of money on this plaything?

Personally- I'd not buy it without trying it- my console of choice is the PS3- my wife the Wii.......

The only downside to this- is the 600Mhz Arm 11 processor.
Hell- I've got a faster processor in my smart phone, and I've had it for a while.
If this is to succeed, it needs the likes of one of the new Snapdragons etc.
At least it supports multitasking as is- but I'd hazard a guess that the processor is the big downside to this.......
You can now get dualcore Arm 11 1.2Ghz chips- thats what would make this a rocket.

I work in a large public organisation- we're still running Windows 2000 across over 90% of our desktops (several thousand), and are beginning to 'trial' Win XP....... When you're using all sorts of development environments- and need to make sure you don't break either your apps, or your development tools- you are sort of stuck. Locking down to a stable environment- even if its 10 years old, is not a bad idea. Win XP is pretty zippy on modern hardware :)

Wrong price bracket
The fact that they're plumming for the U3500 processor (5 watts under full tilt), means this is aimed at those who need battery power- yet, it doesn't compare favourably (other than with its enhanced graphics) with the likes of the £600 Acer 5810T (almost identical or even better specs).
The Asus UX50V is a nice machine- its just about £400 too expensive, or should have the U9400 in lieu of the U3500 (and even then, I'd want another lump shaved off the price).
Me- I bought the Acer 5810T, and got a U9400 engineering sample for £70 on ebay. The only laptop out there with similar specs is a Sony @ £2600, versus my £670 upgrade.
Then again- who upgrades laptops?
Temporary mechanism?
Its not a temporary mechanism. The reason for the vast numbers of pre-orders for Windows 7 Ultimate- is purely to get hold of XP mode (assuming that the purchasers have also checked out their processors support VTx- and that its not hobbled in the BIOS like some manufacturers seem to routinely do).
I've placed a number of Pre-orders for W7U, and will be using XP mode from day one. I've no plans to purchase new apps down the road- as long as my current library of apps work- I've paid good money for licences, I've no intention of going out and replacing the whole lot (yet again). I'm far from unique.
At the moment I dual boot most machines with XP and Vista (and even triple boot a few with Ubuntu)- W7U is a far tidier solution- and is not a temporary solution in my eyes.
You shouldn't need an MCP/MCSE to run your home computer.

If you think Sony's response is inadequate- have a look at Acer/Gateway etc. Even top of the range laptops with x9100s/T9800s/T9600s have VTx disabled at a BIOS level. Thats also making an assumption that you can call that Insyde H2 Bios- a Bios at all.......
It should be relatively easy to rollout a BIOS flash that would enable VTx features (or at very least give the more tech savy customer the option of turning it on in the first instance..........
I've a rather nice 8930G paperweight- that is never going to run my legacy apps, unless I continue to dual boot (or triple boot) as I'm doing at present.
MS really needs to take the manufacturers to task on this........

Family pack only for certain markets?
If they really only allow certain markets a family licence- it will be give Ubuntu such a boost. People have put up with Vista crap for far too long- Windows 7 is simply what Vista *should* have been. Now we have a bewildering variety of Windows 7- with a bewildering variety of licence proposals for end users. Even Mac OS has only 3 options (and two of them are server varients). It really is a case of divide and conquer...... I got my pre-orders in, hope everyone else did too!

As a dual tuner PVR with DVB-T, its definitely of interest. The remote is actually attractive- I nearly got tossed out of a Sony shop at the weekend when I went around counting the number of buttons on their latest remote (46)....... Why companies imagine their remote controls have to resemble a prop from the original 60s series of Star trek is beyond me!!!
Its a bit rough and ready- a little bit of software tweaking would go a long way.
If I didn't already have the Western Digital Media Player- I'd be saving my hard earned cash for one of these- unfortunately the price tag is a bit too rich for my blood as is.......

In all fairness- having played around with Asus' and Acers latest Linux ROM boots- while its impressive that it gets you into a limited working environment so quickly- its simply too limited. I don't know anyone who would willingly limit themselves to the proposed apps- its simply unworkable.......

Eircom customers vent their anger?
Hackers? More likely disgruntled customers pissed off at their appalling service managed to find some way of venting their anger at Eircom for once.
The Eircom statement on the affair is a laugh. "No customer records were exposed"- it was a DDOS attack guys- why would anyone imagine data was exposed?
Unfortunately its yet another manifestation of the ineptitude of Eircom and their broadband services. I left years ago- thank god there are alternates.......

A tenner for a 19" LCD panel..... Nice one if you need a new panel- I can't see there being a ready market for anyone hoping to make a quick buck reselling them thought...... 19" LCD panels are pretty much obsolete? If it was 22" or 24" widescreen panels- that would be a different story......
I do think its a bit much trying to browbeat Dell into honoring a genuine pricing error though- there is no consumer enforcement agency in Europe or the States who would dream of this. It does smack of opportunism on the part of the Taiwanese........

Acer have confirmed that the 8Gb SSD Linux model is due to be updated almost immediately- the initial launch is solely to use up stocks of the 8Gb SSDs. It is reported that the Linux model will be updated to a 160Gb HDD model. The other big plus- the Linux is Ubuntu 9.04! I'm going to wait a bit- and try to get a 160Gb Linux one in a few weeks time.

Asus- did not shoot themselves in the foot with their 'Its better with Windows' campaign- they shot themselves in the foot when they introduced Linux to the mass market as that Linpus crap on the original 701s. Many people who were willing to view Linux with a reasonably open mind- were exposed to one of the worst distros out there- when they could have spent a couple of weeks knocking together something that would have given Mac OS a run for its money. Thats where Asus shot themselves in the foot. The really bad problems particularly with wireless configuration in Linpus- meant the return rate on the original 701s were startlingly high in comparison to industry norms- and gave Asus a bad taste of what it considered consumer's preference to be........
FYI- I triple boot with Vista Ultimate 64 bit, XP 64bit, and Ubuntu 64 bit. I have no probs with any hardware in any of the operating systems (other than realtec codec probs in Vista- but thats a known problem). I even use Steam on Ubuntu for some limited gaming- because it saves having to kill a load of background applications. I've found the update feature of Ubuntu very helpful- and a lot more intuitive than Windows Update (my last update of device drivers for the aforementioned soundcard necessitated a restore to LKGC).
Its not black and white. If Linux machines are sold at a discount to Windows Machines- a la the way the Acer Revo have priced its range- there is a very good sustainable market for each operating system. Shovelling an operating system out the door- without thought to the underlying hardware and what consumers really want (or need), is fatal.
Pricey- and with a crap processor......
Who is going to pay £450 for a touch screen netbook, with a really awful processor and very low onboard storage? Perhaps the same question was asked of the 701- when it debuted- but at least it had price in its favour. At £450- I can get a very reasonable laptop- just why would I spend that sort of money on this plaything?

My wife used play a lot of SIMs- I'm going to download the unfinished copy- and if we like- we will be top of the queue to buy it. Its total bullshit that every download equates to a lost sale- I'd wager that a significant number of downloads translate into sales that might not otherwise have occurred...... Personally- I'd not buy it without trying it- my console of choice is the PS3- my wife the Wii.......
