Re: The fact is that Sony is no longer an electronics company
Media - well I haven't bought any of their music recently not sure on films as I do not buy that many now.
However last year we bought 3 Sony exclusive games more or less day of release, I think this more likely to make money than yet another identikit talent show singer.
However games is one media tied closely to hardware.
As to hardware purchases - check lists more important than brands
Actually I think that MOST of Sonys issues are due to the music studios and film studios management.
They are at odds with the Japanese side of technical excellence.
And we can lay the blame at all the people who bought VHS!
Why?
Because Sony only bought into media to make sure they could support a new format rather than have it wiped out. So if Beta had survived they would not have bought Root Kit music (part of same group as a movie studio)
But I would add ImgBurn - very usefull and is a lot more reliable than the burning routines in the video editing packages, mind you I did pay for Tsunami MPEG encoder instead of the built in ones.
I use Notepad++ for non IDE work, since my new work PC cannot use TSE.
My last camera was in the bad CCD period, but deck was playing up, sent it to Sony and it came back working
40GB PS3 YLODed, Sony offered a S/H repaired one for a reasonable (to them price) in exchange, but would NOT transfer data so would mean losing ALL of our saves and DLC.
Got it repaired for less than half the cost but that didn't last so DIYed it and transfered to a newer one a 320GB Slim.
Yes I could have gone elsewhere but it was at the period of RROD, (same problem) and what else would have played Uncharted 2?
Thinking about it the 40GB PS3 is OUR least reliable - 2 YLODs, Wii never broken down (never used), PS2 has had a Laser, Dreamcast laser is gone, most reliable and used is a PSP, the DSs are both getting ratty.
Where is the QS range on audio & home cinema gear?
Where is the better than average middle price stuff?
I tend to like Sony stuff but I am unimpressed with their recent consumer products.
Go to a Sony Centre and have a look around, apart from the TVs not much else there worth buying, the Home Cinema kit is no longer syaing buy me - hifi now just seems to be docks for other brands of MP3 players.
I will say that I bought a video camera 2 years ago and Sony won that sale fair and square against - well I couldn't find much else apart from them as I wanted HDV - hidef Mini DV tapes.
So what do they need to do?
Make their kit aspirational again, make it the best in its market, it is only a couple of years ago when this was sayable with their top end LCD TVs, they used to sell loads of mid range home cinema kit, now it is cheap and flimsy or very expensive.
Their digital stills camera have a lack of image and brand, at their level the market name belongs to Nikon or Canon. Digital video market appears to have collapsed, but their semi pro kit is nice.
Bullies are not always tough and cyber bullies do not know who they are picking on. So they pick on a range of people including IT experts and well mannered tough nuts and it is likely IT people will pass on the information to the tough nut.
I think it was the that the troll concerned actually finished his picking on people for good. Because unbelievably he had managed to find a woman and she was told in no uncertain terms what he had done.
Re: People who practice doing something turn out to be better at it
Scifi guns don't suffer from bullet drop. Even the bullet based sniper weapons - you need to ask Visari Corp.
The speed of the normal rifles again you are close quarters, you tend to just shoot them.
I will try the lead in tonight if I play with the sniper, but normally if their hit box is in the sights, I shoot they die. But normally you are sniping people camping or running towards you. Panning a sniper rifle is not easy with motion controls.
I didn't know what they were when I was younger and thought that they were all what now know are astronomers. Then I saw a L on TV wafflling on about contellations and what will happen, and thought what an idiot (small children do not know many suitable words) then knew what the differences were.
Ammo I find is easy, spawn as engineer and make ammo crates, put up a turret, get killed, come back as a tactician with aerial bot, and get kills off both, sentries do not need ammo.
Huge difference as well between controller and pointing devices.
I cannot use a normal game controller for a competative FPS at all well.
I however can use pointing devices OK, in fact the first FPS controls I used were keyboards, then KBM.
But using a pointing device in a shooter game is so much more natural than wobbling a stick, so much so that I, an over 40 can compete with any other player and not get wiped out. I just position the aiming crosshairs over the opponent and shoot, not even needing to go to sights unless it is a long way away.
Mind you I find when in game sniping I need to hold my breath to avoid wobble.
All legal of course, ex army ect I have no issue with him owning them. But I play shooting games a lot with motion control so literally point & shoot, so I wonder how I would do?
Perhaps they should have done PS Sharpshooter & real rifle and see what happened.
Fans of Resistance and Killzone do not like their games being knocked just for being PS3.
Insomniac have managed some good stories especially R3, RFoM was good as well.
Guerilla have a well thought out and imaginative universe and one of the best multiplayers out there, Killzone 3 is also a standout motion control game, so good that you feel better than DS3 players.
And finally we have a Brian Cox (actor) speech on every KZ game.
What do you mean Sony never had an FPS to compete.
There are TWO here on the PS3 not just the ONE.
Basically do you want a WW2 era SciFi shooter or a interplantary war SciFi shooter?
And there are 8 games between them, PS2 PS3 PSP..
And you can see the heroes as people.
We have a baddies played by Ray Winstone & Sean Pertwee.
We have fantastic weapons, like ones which shoot through walls, we have cloaking technology, we have the best console graphics on a FPS, and the best story.
At work one not interested, one can't afford, one not sure what to get (I recommended PS2 due to age of children and HUGE amount of cheap games), one hasn't got one yet, one PS3 owner.

Re: A Sony fanboy speaks
I have a STRDB930 receiver - rather good it is too.
Now I have seen what I am supposed to replace it with - pretty flimsy and I would NOT purchase.
Where is the nice solid stuff you know will last you 10 to 15 years now?
I wouldn't mind a HDMI switching amp

i.Link
This is confusing, but I found out that 1394 = Firewire = iLink
I call the leads trailing out of the PC USB and Firewire
Re: absolutely
Umm I can only think of online help.
Re: why the hate? TVs
Actually there is/was a pattern.
One shot had 4 Sony LCDs next to each other, 2 crap 2 good.
Different prices, people bought the craps ones for the badge and the expensive ones for the picture.
S series was pretty basic & crap, W series was very good, one was cheap one was good value and they were not the same TV.
Wega TVs were awsome, untill they dropped the prices too much. I paid 1200 for a 32" 50Hz TV - outstanding picture on it, later ones - quality poorer.
CD players - my car changer is old and OK. My home player is a Pioneer DVD player - now that was an excellent and good value piece of kit.
Telletubbies
Teletubbies vs The Predator - I would see this!
Tinky Winky jumps on it, La La says eh-oh.
The Noo Noo sucks it up and they turn it into Tubbie Tustard.
I still remember this 10 years after it was on TV, then they moved onto Tweenies, and Bob the Builder.
Worrying is that 1 now watches Deadenders and the other 2 rather naff cartoons on CITV.
ATRAC
The reason they used this is very simple.
It is the Minidisc compression algorithm, it is efficient, it works, but as you found the software is not good.
As to other standards - we all remember the losers, the memory sticks are no better and no worse than SD, just a different format.
Wow WFW again
We had this in Windows for WorkGroups
Invicible class was restricted as well
To one single VSTOL aircraft but were comparitavely cheap and effective.
Re: £57million German War Kit
Best kit
Hmm I'd put Spitfire, Mosquito and Lancaster as better than anything the Germans had.
I do know that there was an arms race between Me/Bf109/FW190 and the various marks of Spitfire.
I have a few of those
But I would add ImgBurn - very usefull and is a lot more reliable than the burning routines in the video editing packages, mind you I did pay for Tsunami MPEG encoder instead of the built in ones.

After sales - variable
Good - full service and new CCD sensor
Bad - lack of interest in YLOD
My last camera was in the bad CCD period, but deck was playing up, sent it to Sony and it came back working

Would have been better off with
The 3 Invincible class carriers and a load of Sea Harriers.
I think they were capable enough.

PS3 and XBox same failure
Bad contacts between PCB and graphics chip.
What causes this?
heat & lead free solder, not flexible enough to cope.
I think this is more to blame for failures than anything else now

Re: PVR to the Rescue
Everything PVRed here, even Top Gear so I can pause it.
TV watching.
Is this why I manage 90 minutes a day of only a few decent programmes.
Computer & TV - one or other not both.
BGT = headphones on and on PC
Anything scenic or interesting, slob out on settee with feet up.
Will be unpopular here but I am enjoying the latest hairy biker series, some nice camera work.
Cure for cyber bullying
Real case quite a few years ago.
A victim was given the bullies phone number and address.
This victim was a tough nut.
The bullying stopped.
Is the Lightning 2 as good as Lightning
Can it intercept U2s?
Can it catch an airliner from behind while said airliner is supercruising?
Can it climb at supersonic speeds?
Re: One huge problem
Thanks
I reckon 75% have camera shake but I have a few good shots as it was the only photo device I had on me.
My SLR leaks light and films are now £15 for 36, my video camera is a bit bulky but its stills are pretty good.
Re: One huge problem
I don't - I can hold cameras steady
One huge problem
I just cannot hold a camera phone steady to take a shake free shot.
I struggle to get a decent pic from an N8.
When it is steady it is good.

Re: sketchup and 3d printing?
2D - or now make layers for brass etching, new growth market
Re: Why Did Google Sell SketchUp? Impact to 3D Printing
Definately wrong time.
I am investigating CAD at the moment, I was going to get this as it is supposed to be pretty good.
There is definately an increase in CAD in the modelling hobby, companies providing 3D printing, and also artwork for etching companies.
I want a rare unmodelled railway vehicle - draw up the artwork and send off to an etching company. want a small scale tram body - 3D printing company.
This is just starting to explode, and this is the wrong time for google to sell off CAD.

Re: People who practice doing something turn out to be better at it
One huge difference with moving targets
Real guns you need to aim ahead, game guns you don't.
BTW 2 shots still missed the clay disc, I reckon another couple and I would have hit it.
Re: I better have a go with a neighbours guns then
I have used air pistols / rifles years ago fun actually.
1 go with shotgun
But never a bullet gun
Re: I better have a go with a neighbours guns then
Paper targets don't shoot back
Other players do shoot back - but there is no respawn in real life
Software bloat
I am personally going the other way, trying to squeeze a little more out of it.
Word processors need little hardware, if they do they are poorly written.
I better have a go with a neighbours guns then
All legal of course, ex army ect I have no issue with him owning them. But I play shooting games a lot with motion control so literally point & shoot, so I wonder how I would do?

Open GL
The PS3 graphics system is Open GL based.
Id use Open GL as well
They don't

However Wii owners in general only tend to buy a few games, PS3/Xbox owners tend to buy more games for their systems.
