clears the way?

No more fondling those slabs fanbois, you'll be jabbing them.

You're saying these are going into production and will be available soon, or included with the next iPad and iPhones?

No?

Because it's not like Apple have past form for patenting an idea and then not producing the product is it?

Re: Deja vu from recent Reg headlines

never let it be said that El Reg doesn't know how to bear a grudge against someone, even after they've died

Re: Well ...

question on a wifi scanner? these give you a list of all the wifi networks nearby that are broadcasting their SSIDs? is that different than the list of wifi networks that show up in the wifi settings screen? or does it allow you to try and crack their passwords or something?

Re: Was looking forward to it but the hype has put me off...

the aim-assist locks you on for a body shot, you still have to manually aim to get the headshot. and bodyshots use up a ton of ammo, so headshots are the only real option, making the aim-assist quite redundant anyway.

The /real/ problem with this game...

...is that I've been playing it for an hour each night since Tuesday, and so far I haven't seen a single TV showing me the on-going Adventures Of Captain Baseball Bat Boy damnit!

These are the small touches that are missing from the game so far that means it's almost, but not quite, as good as the original. It'd be like playing a GTA game without Lazlo on a radio station.

(unless, of course, they have an episode of Lords & Ladies playing on a radio later on in the game, in which case please ignore this whole post)

Where's the El Reg Top Ten... Jailbreak apps ?

I've JB'd my iOS devices at various times over the years, to see what all the fuss was about.

But each time, I've never found anything on the other side of the garden wall that was sufficiently amazing, or consistently stable enough to warrant all the effort.

I assume I'm just not finding the amazing software that's out there which drives everyone's burning desire to jailbreak

Re: That's not Max Payne!

actually - Max Payne looked like Sam Lake in the first game.

But in MP2 he looks like Timothy Gibbs.

And in MP3 he looks like James McCaffrey.

ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Payne_(character)#Character_development

So it's not lame. It's entirely in keeping with the tradition of the game.

Should have realised before

Didn't they do any stats beforehand to realise that no one likes the ads and no one clicks on them?

Or did they just hope that for some reason, after the IPO, we'd all have a change of heart?

jai

Re: What adverts?

I don't. I access the site via m.theregister.co.uk

But that is more because with the adverts, it's blatantly obvious to passers-by in the office that I'm reading a website.

The plain layout of the mobile site is perhaps a little less obvious that I'm not doing the work I should be doing. Just need to override the CSS that puts the big splashes of red at the top and bottom and then I can fully pretend I'm busy reading TPS reports....

From home I access the normal site though, so I'm not depriving El Reg of their income too much :)

jai

space elevators damnit! how hard can it be????

jai

Re: "hopefully without a patent-war"

(how big is a pace in space, by the way?)

It may be just one small pace for man, but a giant pace for mankind.....

jai

More like by Wednesday after next half of us will be running for our lives trying to stay alive and away from the ravening hoards of space-zombie-infected mutants that the rest of you have become.

jai

Re: Microsoft already did it!

But this has far far better resolution than Kinect. Much more accurate and able to detect a greater range of gestures.

Plus, apparently it'll only cost $70 so it's cheaper too.

jai

Re: Good move

Actually - market has only been open for 25 minutes and the stock is already 2.42% up on it's opening price and increasing.

Re: Not Fair

it's Zed that I feel sorry for. Poor bugger hardly ever gets any work at all.

Re: iPad the future?

you might not be a fan, but it seems you're increasingly going to be in the minority

Re: "Foxconn-rebrander"

really? this is the first El Reg article about Apple that you've read in the last 6 months is it?

jai

Quote Reuters-rebrander Anna: Still, it will be green space that the locals won't be allowed into.

But surely they can't wander freely around the old HP Offices that are currently there, can they? So what's the difference?

Or is the local authorities planning on not selling the land to anyone and instead putting a local park in the place that they'd have to fund themselves?

jai

Re: Samsung Fanbois

funny - I control my Samsung telly with their app on my iPhone....

jai

Also, I'm sure I read (possibly on this very site) that Foxconn produce products for Samsung also.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxconn#Major_customers

If Scrib.com-rebrander Anna was at all impartial (y'know, like a proper journalist) then the article would start something like:

"Foxconn-rebrander Samsung has asked a Californian court to dismiss seven of Foxconn-rebrander Apple's expert witnesses in a patent case"

jai

but surely, if Apple open up the SDK to allow Kaspersky and the like to develop AV software, that also means they'll open up access routes that malware/virus writers can exploit too, no?

jai

shocker!

Is there anyone who didn't see that happening? Admittedly, it's happened sooner than I thought, I figured the bubble would last for a few weeks at least.

jai

real windows?

or are these the usual chinese knock-offs that are actually running some hacked version of android made to look like windows phone?

jai

Re: And then there is the weather

So we build a space elevator and we don't need to launch, we just take the people and cargo up out of the atmosphere were the GB Space Platform is in orbit, and from there build and launch our craft.

I'm mean, c'mon! we built the Spitfires and won the Battle of Britain. We should be able to build a damn space elevator by now ffs!!!

On problems logging in now

I've had no problems logging in to play the game lately. In fact, it was only on Tuesday that I had issues. The last two nights have been fine. And also in the mornings for half an hour before i leave for work.

Re: Amazing game

i did that too! luckily i checked my pre-order list before buying it again.

then i went out and bought a 50quid mouse to use with the game and completely wiped out my savings. doh!

jai

"Fanbois are already frothing..."

[citation needed]

and is that frothing in anger, or frothing in the pants in anticipation?

jai

a little late for testing?

isn't it a bit late for testing? what if they find a complete show-stopper in their testing, like the sand gets in the motors and locks them up, or sticks to the comms gear and prevents them being able to control it? surely all this testing should have been done before the punted the other robot off towards Marx.

jai

Re: Yeah Yeah....

why the downvote? that was a perfectly good Capricorn One reference, I was going to make it myself if no one else had.

jai

shocking

so Google are bad at social but good at advertising

and Facebook is bad at adverts but good at social

and this is a surprise to who?

jai

Re: You /need/ to be online?

GTA V? Yes we're all anticipating that, but it's not going to be coming out any time soon. I'm not expecting it this year. There's been no trailers or teaser details or anything yet. Rockstar love to spend 9 months leading up to the release of their GTA games, slowly stoking the hype and the anticipation. That's plenty of time to play D3 while waiting for GTA V

Btw - you think GTA V isn't going to require online access via PSN account or Xbox equivalent? I bet it'll happen.

jai

Re: BTDTBTTS

perhaps Nameless Mist left it as an intellectual exercise for the reader to make the jump between the two?

Which is a bit much for a Monday morning admittedly...

jai

Heath Robinson

The world needs more Heath Robinson contraptions. There ought to be government grants for any new construction or product brought to market that can involves a demonstrable Heath-Robinson-ness.

In fact, most of the code I write could probably be classified as Heath-Robison-esque.... :)

jai

Re: Okay so...

Fight Club.

I'm pretty sure Lenovo have done the maths and worked out that if one does catch fire and burns someone's kids to a crisp, the reputation loss and potential law suits outweigh the cost of this recall.

jai

awesome

I've no need for a Fire, but a colour Kindle would be perfect. Can't wait!!

jai

too late

why didn't you do this article last month? i'd have liked to back the Shadowrun reboot :(

jai

so

not so much good for surfing the web while sitting out in the garden then...

jai

pics or it didn.... oh

jai

this is pretty awesome

better watch out though - the next time your score in Angry Birds gets beaten, don't trash talk against whoever did it, you might anger a 200 lb monke ape

jai

More likely..

Considering that Pegatron currently supply iPhone 4s along with Foxconn, is it not much more likely that this report is that they will also start producing the current iPad (being named the "new iPad") in addition to Foxconn. And hence the confusion in thinking that it's a new model/design?

jai

Re: Repeat after me

Yet you still clicked the link and commented on the article. You're as much a part of the problem as the journalists who publish these rumours.

jai

Two seperate races being run here

All these articles constantly talking about which company will win or loose, but it seems to me, they're always mixing up the races that are being run. One is for market share, the other is for profit.

Market share doesn't pay the bills or keep employers in jobs when it's divided amongst multiple companies all flying the Android flag, and all trying to undercut each other's prices in an effort to increase their personal wedge of the market share pie.

The easiest way for Google to gain maximum market share and "win" will be to give the Android tablets away free. But I don't see any of the Android manufactures signing up for that plan any time soon.

jai

familiar idea

Wasn't this an idea in a Neil Stephenson book? or was it a William Gibson one?

jai

reeks of particularly unimaginative troll

jai

The "great unwashed", as you dismiss them, will never see the 2,1 or 2,4 model numbers. It takes a bit of effort to discover them, most users, if they even decide to look for one, will only see MC9xxLL/A which won't mean anything to them.

jai

really enjoying this game

Haven't played any Total War games, but friends have raved about them for years.

Well worth the purchase, both taxing and enjoyable.

Hope they continue to put out similar titles in the future.

jai

Re: FAIL

that's like saying "it's a toss-up really: having your left arm cut-off or your right-leg"

neither are at all appealing and you'd surely rather just do nothing than doing one or the other

jai

Re: Sod the apps

I know that the IT Dept in companies would rather that all employees only use "work" phones for work purposes.

But all employees would probably rather use their own phone so they only have to carry around one. And all management want to use the latest and shiniest smartphone even if they don't understand how to use 90% of the functions that class the phone as a smartphone.

Yes, internal audit and legal departments would probably sleep easier at night if all employees were locked to basic 'work' phones.

But the accountants and the shareholders would rather that costs were kept to a minimum as so allow employees to bring their own devices.

And in these times of austerity and recession, I suspect it's the bean counters that have the loudest voice in the corporate boardrooms. Which means there's not going to be much of a market out there for a 'work' phone as you describe.
