Balance?

I realise El Reg is a blog and isn't known for balance but I believe that there ought to be a writer on The register who balances Lewis's views.

What paper does Andrew read?

"So was the rubbishy newspaper that printed the untrue story about the other rubbishy newspaper the first to need a permit?"

So what paper does Andrew read?

I guess it's not The Guardian then. The Telegraph or more likely The Sun I think, or even more likely none at all.

Training etc

1. So the £430,000 cost includes training and insurance does it?

2. How about auditing and accountability?

3. Have you seen how many computers and phones they loose.

4. How about security of communications. Fine for reading web pages but I bet they will be using them to send emails etc.

True

Steve Gibson on the Security Now podcast spoke bout this type of attack quite some time ago. It's particularly bad if someone manages to combine it with DNS spoofing. If that happens it looks like you are really connected to your bank rather than a dodgy third party site.

It is true however that the "something you have" authentication method is far superior to having just a password.

Texts

Some US banks send you a text when you try to log in. The texted number is valid for 15 mins and is then used as your second factor. This of course only works when you have a mobile and have coverage.

The Sun

This is on The Sun's website. The comments make for interesting reading, overwhelmingly they think that the US has got it right and we should follow their lead. Comments about "keeping out illegals" appear to outweigh the rest by a fairly wide margin.

I would like to add that I was taken to their site by via a tweet and I'm not a normal reader or their brand of right wing crap.

Commercial Sat Nav

I've had some dealings n this area and specialist mapping foe trucks etc is certainly available. These have a database of all height, width and tonnage restrictions and also often come with a service contract to update the database. The problem is that your standard Lithuanian haulage firm/driver cannot afford them or just can't be arsed to get them. They buy the standard version instead that are aimed at car drivers and blithely follow them. Many truck drivers cannot speak or read english, therefore putting signs up saying "LOW BRIDGE, DO NOT USE SAT NAV" have no effect whatsoever on these drivers.

Reality distortion field

It's the RDF that really pisses me off. Apple makes quite nice products for the well off and nearly bugger all for everyone else. Yet people who have very little money are brainwashed into believing that buying an Apple product will significantly make their lives better. It's mainly "media types" and a few tech jorno's i.e. Jon Honeyball etc who are the worst offenders. A brief trawl through Twitter during IOS 5 download day showed what a bunch of sheep these people are.

Some of them make me feel sick. I used to follow Rob Brydon on Twitter until he caught the Apple bug. He recently did a reading of his new book (I wouldn't bother it's crap) at the Apple store which he called his "spiritual home". WTF! That was it, a swift unfollow occurred before I threw up over my keyboard.

Ballmer should go but..

Yep, the shouty, squeaky CEO should go. The question is who is going to fill his size nines?

This is a serious question, should it be someone from within the company or a new broom? If it is a new broom then who has the technological vision and the respect of the investment community? Whatever happens they need to get it right first time, a job that could be very difficult. We could be in for a very interesting six months or so.

ACPO Conductive Metal Theft Working Group

I for one would like to put myself forward as the primary member of the Non-Conductive Metal Working Group. I guarantee that all thefts of non-conductive metals will be solved within one day. I'd be willing to provide this service for the nominal sum of £500 per day.

If Virgin had won

If Virgin had won the lottery contract then they would have used the Mobitex (radio) network to connect the terminals to the host. The UK Mobitex network was at that time run by RAM Mobile Data Ltd, now run in the UK by BT.

New Nano - Shame :-(

I love the Nano I've had two (2G and 3G) and loved them both. Mine is starting to play up as the "menu" switch doesn't always register. So I was really looking forward to the refresh and maybe getting one as a Christmas pressie. But, Ho Dear! the new Nano is shit. Why do they take away features and call it progress? I wasn't too bothered about the video camera but not being able to play video is a problem. Yes, I know it's a tiny screen and I normally listen to audio however, occasionally I download a video podcast to watch, now I can't. So the new design is more expensive and with less features. I'm going to be looking around for a new 4G whilst stocks last.

Of course there are people on the plan who can make an announcement. However, if you engage your brain for a second and think about it, the staff may be a bit too busy trying to land (water) the plane safely rather than spend time on the PA system making announcements.

Slartybardfast

Really

Some people find the word offensive when it's used out of context. In context there's nothing wrong with it. I believe that sending it in an unsolicited mailshot with no real idea of recipient is out of context.

Slartybardfast
FAIL

Fuck all really

Oh course Fuck is offensive, that's its whole point. If you're looking for words that aren't overly offensive to mean "having a fuck" then use shagging or similar.

Sometimes you need a good swear word. I have nothing against the word fuck, I use it myself when I need to. However, I don't use it that often, when I use it people around me know I'm seriously pissed off.

If you use fuck all the time when "lesser" terms are available, what do you use when you really want to swear? You have to keep some words in reserve for when you mean it. There's nothing wrong with having offensive words in a language. You seem to feel that we should be free to use all words at any time, anywhere. That would have the effect of dumbing down English as it synonymies "fucking" with "shagging" . Although the literal meaning is the same the cultural meaning is not, and long may it be so.

I feel sorry for the small minority of losers who feel they do not have the vocabulary to talk/write without keeping some words in reserve

Because of the money

Once a manufacturer makes a Wintel driver it'll work on 95% of all Windows pc's. Therefore because of market share, manufacturer's of windows gadgets do not always feel the commercial need to write drivers for the Mac environment. Given that Apple is a minority computer maker.

However, as others have said, if Apple were to produce drivers for Wintel systems, they would sell a lot more magic trackpads. They are not being forced to write a Wintel driver, it just makes commercial sense.
