I once talked to a tower climber about his job, and the hazards associated with it.
Since he is based in the southern states (USA of course), the most dangerous aspect is not the climb, but nasty weather that rolls in faster than he could get safely down.
He told me that one day, he had top climb to the top of a 1850 foot tower located near Florida's Atlantic shore. As he started up, the sky was clear and bright blue. Once he got to the top, and was well into fixing the problem, he looked eastward (out over the Atlantic), and saw this nasty storm cloud. It looked like it was heading his way. Tough choice to make - finish the job; and PRAY that you can get down BEFORE the storm hits; or take the safe route, and get down while there is still time.
Recently, I got a new 'puter loaded with WindbloZE 7 on it.
As a diehard Linux user, I could not tolerate the prospect of a WindblowZE infection existing on my 'puter.
After purchasing a new, larger hard drive, I took the anti-static bag it came in, and put the old WindblowZE 7 hard drive in it, and plastered the bag with `biohazard` labels.

NOT by me.
AFAIAC, Unity is a complete FAIL - for a desktop. Unity plain sucks!
NOT being a tablet/smartphone user, I offer NO opinion, but I do see its potential.
I will concede that Unity is easier for n00bs; but, as an accomplished desktop user, I can not stand it. There are times when I need 5 or 6 windows open as I go about the daily grins, and that is a royal pain with Unity.
Now, I will concede one thing the Unity people `got right`, and that is the screen switcher, and the way you can get the multiple desktops open in a screen. WROK PLACE is trying that (enhanced screen switcher) out on some RDP sessions for server control.
Agreed, they should have copyright shoved so far up their asses, it just might come out of their noses.
If all Dish did was to send specific "cues" in the data stream that identifies specific points; like "begin commercial block", "end commercial block", and nothing else. Thereby leaving the "blocking" decision to the end viewer, then fuck the networks. That would be no different from what can happen right now (manual editing). Simple viewer instruction, change this setting to block adverts.
They may have a problem if the advert bits get dropped before they hit Dish's network, but IANAL.

That will get the attention of those m-----f---ing slime balls. Bankrupt them, strip those sheisters of their law licenses.

Re: Better hope OS X security is all it's cracked up to be
You have a sight mistake in your last sentence.
It should read:
"That goes double when you introduce the idea that YOUR system is IMMUNE to hackers so (L)user don't need to worry about patching it as a marketing tool."
IIRC, there is an international treaty that requires spacefaring nations NOT to contaminate other worlds, so just dumping such materials would be 'looking for trouble'.
And, ditto about another posters mention of "Greenpeace".
I remember the 'shit storm' that arose before the nuke powered Cassini probe was launched. Such an attempt will also result in serious litigation in an effort to stop it.
Re: Linux based system(s) will be a fine replacement for my XP.
What is taking you so dammed long?
I ditched XP over 4 years ago when I started playing with Ubuntu.
Lately, I have been giving serious thought to replacing `This Old Box` with something powered by an i3. Since it is likely to come from a `big box` retailer, the question is what to do with the pre-installed Windblowze 7 Home Premium.
My choices are:
1) dual boot Ubuntu and Windblowze (I really don't want a Windlowze infection on my computer), or
2) nuke Windlowze from orbit, and maybe making a set of recovery discs beforehand.
Teach the little shit a real lesson; I wholeheartedly support infliction of PHYSICAL pain on fraudsters prior to their being sent off to the kilnk. Take fraudster's hands, extend the grubby little fingers, and WHACK them with a nightstick (a/k/a 'billyclub'), ensuring that said fingers are broken. Until said fingers heal, it should be interesting to see how such twit wipes his ass!
Buybacks occur sometimes because some mid level boss has gotten away with paying a good person less than they should have gotten (keeping the balance to pad his bonus). Finally, the screwed person decides it is time to jump ship, and the boss is forced to do something, hence, the buyback.
My opinion is this, once you decide to leave an employer, walk, and NEVER look back. Do not let the `siren song` of "more money" cause you to `crash upon the rocks`. Because, you know damn well that the boss will screw you over again if the chance arises.
Karma is when you leave an employer because of a bad boss, and some time later, that same boss comes to work for your new employer in a subordinate role.
RE: What I don't get is why kitchen appliances need to be dragged in again.
Why NOT?
It is just another opportunity for the marketing droids to send you `targeted advertising`
Image, for a moment, a "connected" refrigerator that senses when you remove a cold beverage from it. Thanks to the embedded RFID chip, your refrigerator knows what you drink, and a savvy (excuse me, SLEAZY is more appropriate here) advertiser can inform you of a sale on such beverage at your local mart.
It is also likely that such a `smart` refrigerator can remind you of items that are getting a bit long in their 'use by' dates.
Marketing droids would have the proverbial "orgasm" over the possibility of mining such data.
I remember from a long time ago, of some slob in a Chicago apartment building who was the "victim" of faulty information. This was back in the days when Chicago cops used "no knock" warrants at 3AM. This guy heard noise outside his apt door, and when the first cop bust through, he took several rounds. The fcuking DA tried to hang the resident for attempted murder of a LEO. Only when it was finally made public that the cops had the wrong apartment, did the DA back down.
Like the poster above, I would consider it a complete waste of piss to put out a cop on fire.

Otherwise, FAIL, because that is the obvious choice.

Not really, if they were 'out there' with no space craft, or environment suit.
I can visualize LEO being populated with dozens of `suits` stranded in space; for the greater good of mankind.

Oh, and btw, this was a FIXED PRICE job!
WWYD???
Re: P.S. Paris, because I'd like to climb that! ;-)
You better be careful!!!! It could be dangerous inserting objects into a `black hole`!!
Re: `Top Move`
What do you expect, after all they just had their asses handed to them courtesy of the jury verdict in the trial against Google.
Allow me to be the first to predict that Oracle will find some reason to use this acquisition's IP in some lawsuit in the next 12 to 30 months.
Eli$on and co would do well to turn in their immediate resignations, before the stockholders demand their heads `on a silver platter`.
Re: Look guys...when you upgrade to Windows 8....
In WHAT fucking parallel universe????
I can't wait for the wailing and gnashing to come out of 'big business' at the prospect of having to retrain office staff to have to deal with Metro.
Then again, spoken by a freetard who ripped Unity off this Ubuntu box.
Re: Oh, grief!
Me TOO!!!!
What a bunch of dumb fuckwits!

WindblowZE - dangerous to the health of a 'puter.

Re: ...allow applications to run faster ...
You forgot one VERY IMPORTANT aspect to that statement:
the words `MICROSOFT CREATED` are missing from between `allow` and `applications`.
Re: Ubuntu software centre...it's just a pretty front end to apt-get.
Which means it is a breeze to remove:
sudo apt-get remove software-center
and while we are at it,
sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback
sudo apt-get remove unity-3d
makes for a much better system

RE: they can't even sue the U.S government to recoup their loses
Imagine the individual MAFIAA members facing the possibility of having to pay damages?
That is WHY (sovereign Immunity) the MAFIAA bosses got the FBI to 'do the dirty work'.
They win, taxpayers and legitimate Mega Upload customers LOSE!
Re: Wonder what the final bill will be.
A better question would be:
"WHO will be paying that bill"?
I seriously doubt it will be members of the MAFIAA; and more likely US taxpayers.
After all, we here in the good ole USA have "The Best Government (the MAFIAA members) Can Buy!".
This botched FBI operation just proves it.

RE: This is why "cloud" is such a stupid idea.
I keep trying to explain that to those dumb 20-somethings that are fresh out of MBA school.
They just don't get it.
I feel this way, if Mr MBA Genius wants it "in the cloud"; all he has to do is to put it in writing.
That way, after I point out the fallacy of his "idea", also in writing, when the shit hits the fan, I will not be worried.
Pirate, because "walking the plank" is a dangerous undertaking for the 'wet behind the ears' MBA newbie.

In that case, blame the `bean counters`.
Somehow, they got it into their minuscule minds that you can cut the bitrate in order to cut costs.
In the name of `increasing shareholder value`, once was a 10Mb/s signal gets cut down to 2.5Mb/s.
Lousy bastards.

You would have to be logged in as `root`, or using sudo to bring about that kind of damage under Linux.
Windblowze, the biggest FAIL the world has ever seen.
Re: Easy to fix
Simples!
get rid of that shitty operating system called Windows, and use Linux.
TUX, because you are less likely to get "infected" surfing the web.
