Re: Why no Android phones?

I don't use the SMS based version, I have the Authenticator App installed on my phone, which is also password protected.

I agree with you about 'over-the-shoulder' theft and hence always try to avoid SMS based authentication.

Rob

Could be under-age kids that are involved in gangs and required/pressurised into performing sexual acts, there's a number of horrible scenarios out there as to why this sort of information is on file. It's probably best to stick to questioning why the Council is so shit at data security and who should take the blame within that Local Authority.

Re: Why no Android phones?

Although that might not work if the user uses the 2 step Google authentication process. My Android phone had to be set up with an application specific password so that it could access my Google account, which could only be generated in my Google account, which requires the authenticator to access.

Although I don't know enough about how Google 2 step process works so there might be some flaws that could be used.

Anecdotal story about a dodgy buy on the street

[mindless ramble]

Oddly enough when I was younger a bloke in car spotted me coming out of a shop and called me over to offer me a watch for £20. I bartered him down to £15 (even though I had £30 in my wallet).

This was about 15yrs ago, I still have the watch and with the odd bit of maintenance by a jewellers over the years is still going strong, it is a very unique design and have never seen one since.

On reflection is was a very stupid move but I was lucky enough to come out on top with that deal, something that would never happen nowadays though.

Re: Not entirely a joke, I think.

I know what your saying, but no matter how many users a particular company has unless Facebook get good conversion rates on those Ads they won't be pulling in as much revenue as Google who could have better conversion rates on the Ads they run.

If you want to pay for internet advertising you go with the company that's going to get you the click throughs.

I laughed when I read that bit, bollocks to being a cynic, you've just described how public sector organisations work (no joke, it's fairly standard practise to rationalise after the project has fck'd up, sorry I meant to say rolled out/gone live).

Not for me...

... but then this phone clearly isn't being built for a heavy user, this sort of phone would be fine for someone like my missus who doesn't care whether it has SD Card slot or not (she gets a new phone and immediately hands it to me to sort out and put all of her stuff on).

Re: Only time will tell

Your right Google are still propping up YouTube as it is running at a loss year on year.

They can't even get a decent ad revenue out of it compared to the amount of people using it.

Re: I'm not sure Microsoft's hands were trying to pull them back from the brink

It did cross my mind that this could play into Microsoft's hands quite well, rescue Nokia with some cash and you have a tight relationship with a hardware manufacturer and could maybe influence the model designs a bit more. Things get tough and you need to scale back you can cut your manufacturing partner loose.

Of course MS would never do anything like that....

Leave it, I'm already sobbing at the fact that I would have killed for this sort of thing when I was a kid.

The BBC Micro in the loft with the 'Replay' chip modded onto it doesn't quite count as the same.

Perhaps that might stick a rocket up Amazons arse to get the Fire released in Europe before Google swipe their prospective customers.

RE: In my youth

I used to work for a factory bakery and had to be at work for 6am, I used to cycle but my mate had a 125 motorbike, as it was quiet I used to hold on his arm and get propelled to work a lot quicker, although being a lot older now and have a greater sense of danger, I realise I wrong that could have all gone. My pothole avoidance skills are still finely tuned ;-)

Re: A grab for your telephone number?

You can also use the 2-step app, which I have, I received a code for initial setup and after that I now use the app passcode generator when it asks me for a code.

They will use my phone number as a last resort for authentication if the app dies, or I forget every password that I'm currently using.

Re: Marketing

"There IS such a thing as bad publicity outside the media world you know."

Your right there is indeed bad publicity, but when your target audience is an age group that probably don't know what a patent dispute is but Mum and Dad have been talking about it because it's in the news, that is what you call Brand Awareness, especially as it could lead to a sale, or get the kid talking about the product line the next day with their mates. Besides that's just your interpretation of it, not everyone thinks like you (thank fck).

There are sliding scales of publicity that may seem bad but in fact still do you some favours. Apple's been getting a hammering in the courts and Apple has been hammering Samsung, yet I don't think either have suffered any negative brand awareness in fact for both of them it's been a positive effect in some cases, either way I don't see their share price going south or their products gathering dust on shop shelves.

Marketing

Let's face it, this seems rarely about patent/copyright now and more about marketing nowadays.

Hasbro now has there name in the news and it's pointing to one of it's main product lines, if they settle out of court I bet the figure will be close or cheaper than a marketing campaign to achieve the same brand awareness goal.

I think past 2020, you'll have a real need to be flexible in the early days of your career leading to a specialisation later on in life. The toughest choice will be to decide which tools you like using the most (i.e. computers, ovens, mechanics tools, farmers tools etc) and go from there.

Your 45% figure is in relation to the Smartphone market where Android is indeed saturating the market over the iOS phones. The Tablet market is entirely different at the moment, until the manufacturers produce android tablets at varying price points (like the smartphone market) I can't see Apple budging from the top spot in the tablet market for awhile yet.

Repairs needed

If I wasn't working I'd be there with the BBC B that's in the loft, armed with a soldering iron as we think it has a broken joint somewhere on the board that's stopping it from firing up (got a huge box full of games and software for it still as well).

You missed out mentioning the Cyber-Gravy-Train, which is a big beast, fully laden as it has taken over from other Gravy Trains that have been cancelled by the new Government.

It's anyone's guess why the Government privatised the rail network when they seem to have an uncanny knack for running trains.

@ AC Re: Peole don't say tablet - they say iPad

I don't think you read the original post correctly. I read it as not liking the fact that the surveys main premise for consumers not buying more Android pads was because of the App market maturity. But thinks the main reason Apple sell more iPads (note the poster doesn't actually believe Apple haven't got the market share), because Apple have rather shrewdly been able to define the language and expectation for the tablet market before Android could even get in the starting blocks.

(Don't worry I don't think anyone spotted that in your haste to have a go at someone else you ended up looking too much like a fanbois yourself.)

Too young

Re: "legally old enough to buy."

Completely get your point and agree to an extent, but you'll have to forgive my usual soapbox rant about "parent responsibilty/liability".

Rob

Re: "legally old enough to buy."

Your right there is no legal age limit for PAYG phones as no contract is involved, but you'd be hard pushed to find a shop that will sell a PAYG handset to someone who looks too young without a parent with them, mainly because the handset in question wouldn't have been set-up with age restrictions in place by default and the shop/brand would probably be liable if something bad happened.

Sorry should have worded my original post better.

Re: Not surprised but

"... the onus should be on the developer and advertiser..." missed a bit, let me help you...

"... the onus should be on the parents to ensure all measures are taken to protect children from this content and supervise them when necessary."

There are apps out there to make your device child friendly and stop them from accessing content you don't want them too. It might be a bit hard to convince the advertisers and developers about responsibility as they will assume most 7 year old don't have the money to buy these devices and in the case of a mobile phone aren't legally old enough to buy.

Re: Re: Re: Even as an non apple lover

@Steve the Cynic, I just got back from a good laugh outside, think a bit of wee came out...

... it's alright, just checked no wee. No the surprise here is that you think the high court has the power to ignore the Gov't, which clearly it hasn't as you've just stated, they'll be into anything involving foreign business dealings (or more importantly, contributing to China's GDP). So either way the Chinese Gov't isn't getting involved like the post I was replying too was suggesting.

So no I seriously don't.
