Re: @Tarquin ftlb

So why haven't sea levels changed much? I think I'd notice if they were metres higher. The weather is similar to that experienced throughout my life and I'm now retired. Oh and pollution is a lot smaller than it was in the fifties and sixties except the output from cars particularily in cities.

Yes and probably a whole heap more cycles during it's passage round the galaxy.

Waste of time and effort

I don't buy it or download it. The stuff they sell is manipulative trash. I have no movies or sound tracks on my system but the odd thing is I can watch or listen to this stuff on youtube . Why do they attack what must be a very small arena of techies using Usenet who will run rings round their legal block. Maybe it's because it's a soft target blocking youtube would cause major repercussions. Piracy is impossible to prevent so it has to be lived with whatever the morality.

Don't use IE except on the rare occasions when I needed to re-download chrome. I'm waiting for the first mega cluster F where a silent update kills or severely disables boxes worldwide: It isn't like MS have a perfect record. I don't use firefox since it's such a memory hog. I use to but chrome meets my needs. Windows XP OK for games but these days little else and it will run most older games. I might just disable the network period and just use XP for that.

WTF?

Why is one of those water based asteroids going to hit us? I keep going to Cornwall and the sea level don't vary much. Oh enlightened one tell me how you measure the sea level? Land is constantly rising or falling the ocean floor has heaps of volcanoes and is also in flux. Your other comments are not worth discussing.

Only idiots buy phones that cost a fortune.

My mobile which annoyingly runs out of charge after 10 days cost a tenner with ten quid free calls. It has no apps and my granddaughter thinks its crap but it works.

just find a phucking big storage container

Then fill the thing with gas until meter goes round clock and back to slightly positive on last reading.

Bob. Hitchen

Or don't use a smartphone use a cheap and cheerful phone instead - battery lasts ages.

Er poncey has a whole variety of meanings including someone who looks after game birds. UK humour beats the crap out of anything from the US. However game birds do tend to reduce tossers.

In this case poncey means more style than substance.

O.T.T.

That's way to serious for something that wasn't that interesting in the first place. Microsoft is fair game they've been ripping off the planet for years.

laptops are ok on holiday

I haven't much local use for anything that is not a desktop. 28 inch screen can do multiple thinks at once; don't need a magnifying glass and if it goes wrong can replace the bits easily. Even when I go on holiday with a laptop I use a separate screen keyboard and mouse Oh and a photo printer. Laptops tablets and phones have one major weakness - they use batteries which won't last the day out. I thought dem pads were for people watching a minature Paris in the small room whilst getting a good grip of the essentials. I've heard they have crap cameras front and back - the mind boggles!

The Sun sometimes puts its hat on

Sure you would but they ignore the effects that don't suit them. There is a massive difference between modelling something against measuring actuals. I know which I believe. This is just like theoretical physics mostly junk built by mathematical jiggery-pokery. However nobody is taxing me (Energy or otherwise) to support the big bang multiverses and the like.

Can I have a fiver for everything AGW fundies ignore - Oh and no not the white ones.

Bob. Hitchen
Holmes

Strawman - WTF

The Sun is neither constant or predictable. That's what really get's me about so called climate scientists they only read the research they think supports their case. The Sun produces a massive amount of power across the full radiative spectrum plus magnetic and electrical effects. It also has its own little wobble (SIM) which derives from solar system gravitational effects. If it's all so predictable tell me when and in what direction the next three sloar flares are going to occur.

Yousaying the main source of heat for the planet has constant output?

Bob. Hitchen

Water Vapour

That's the real greenhouse effect. You don't need masses of ex engineers not being able to ski any more to prove it. Deserts at night rapidly lose heat heavy cloud cover retains it. Oh I forgot you people are allergic to things like SIM.

Dumb & Dumber

This is a hoot. Son't need anything complicated just a proxy server. All newzbin does is give the ability to provide a nzb for anything that takes peoples fancy that is on Usenet. Then run something like NOMP with a news server to get all the bits and pieces using the nzb as a template. I don't know how many people still use Usenet and those that do will be resourceful. I just can't see the point of the exercise.unless it is just a stalking horse to block masses of websites downstream.

Paris regularly contributes to the newzbin sister site.

Why do people expect any communication media to be secure

If I want to talk about something privately I do not use a phone or email. It's so bloody obvious that all media stuff or even records are openly available to the vermin on Fleet street.

Bob. Hitchen
Holmes

The kind old Sun would know.?

The main reason I think AGW is junk science is because they have downplayed the Sun's PREDOMINANT role in anything climate. Let me remind you that the Sun is one massive entity - slight changes there have enormous effects elsewhere. It really is simple the Earth hardly retains any heat without cloud cover. Oh and the clouds are not CO2.which is a pitiful fraction of the Earth's atmosphere.

Bob. Hitchen

Understanding the process

What has consensus science got to do with it? If I get cured I don't care if it's a witch-doctor - go figure. Most surgery is born of past experimentation not science

WiFI is pants

That's the bottom line. I run Ethernet or Ethernet over mains. I threw the wireless stuff out long since Ethernet must be at least 50% faster and sustained. I have a wireless laptop but even that gets plugged into wired when I want to download/update software etc. My sky router won't transmit enough wireless to even connect between floors. I did have a conversation with a lady from sky about channels which was one of those wasted moments I'll live to regret.

You rang?

Upgrading an OS is not something that cash strapped organisations take lightly especially if the applications they are running have no forward path. IT professionals work within the constraints set for them usually by the clueless talking to salesmen from MS or elsewhere. It has already been stated that there is a cost benefit analysis to decide if it is worth doing. I use Linux for home use except for some strategy games and a TV package. I have no interest in browsers from MS Chrome works fine even on my old dell laptop under mint. For an IT guy linux offers much better tools than Windows

Dream On

The warranty isn't worth the paper it's written on. Most of the activity is upfront on a new machine just like the day job. Most failures are hardware related longer term so software warranties are a waste of time. Most software support outside heavy commercial/government customers sucks somebody usually has a work round on the web. All my desk tops are home built the laptop was supplied by work with 2000 on it. I still run XP but most of my stuff runs under Ubuntu these days.

Bob. Hitchen

Not major issue

8KW isn't much different to an electric shower. Would need 10mm wire though from consumer unit.. Mind you that's equivalent to 4 2K electric fires - a lot of electric! The costs are mounting all the time to acquire and run an electric vehicle

Bob. Hitchen
FAIL

Convenience

I expect my current vehicles to do long or short haul without hassle. These electric cars are still gimmicks rightly shown by the Beeb to be impractical. There is no need for comparison between journeys if the charge won't last long then one snow storm and the electric car is just as bad on a commuter trip.

Perspective

There are a lot of people here with little or no understanding of legacy systems. These are either bespoke or modified(sometimes heavily) standard packages for business needs. Having spent a great deal of time, effort and money getting these things working why would a business want to throw that away for new anything. If it was 2000 so what? It costs a small fortune to buy in vast numbers of new machines and licences. From a business perspective it is about having something that does the job.

I only use Windows these days for satellite TV and the odd photo editing which picasa3 won't do. Oh and some games. Every thing else is done with Linux. There really is no contest on timing Linux wins every time 20-30 secs and browsing against 5mins plus on XP from pressing the on button. Windows 7 is no better I had a laptop running a game on holiday - no shortage of blue screens. I don't really care about an OS it is not the reason for having a computer the Applications are what matter. Guess what most of those are 32bit because the developer needs to produce for the lowest common denominator. 64bit hardware has been around for yonks but progress towards compatible software has gone at a snail's pace.

Depends how old your box is. In the 60-70's they needed a small power station all to themselves. Consumption was into multiple KwH's

Ubuntu Rocks

I don't know about 10:10 but I've been using Ubuntu for years on everything but pc games and satellite telly. Out of interest I tried 10:04 that came with a pc mag. It worked first time so I loaded a spare disk in a caddy and installed it. Only thing I've done since is installed all the usual flash stuff. Partitions who cares? Get yourself a couple of network disks or usb sticks and COPY important (to you!) files. Ubuntu now offers a clear alternative for computer dummy's.

I won't be buying it

It's that simple XP with all its bloat already does all the things I want only mugs update. I run Ubuntu never given me a problem on what I use it for. Oh and it's free like costs nothing. Yes Linux is a more technical product but being an ex techie that's part of its charm. Only MS windows ap I run is spider soltaire. It's got a lot like those make up advertisements all BS

What's Vista?

All the machines in my house run either xp or linux. Why would I want to downgrade to Vista whatever that is? Oh I build my own or put the O/S on I want. Problem here is that M/S and its agent Dell abuse a monopoly position. Oh XP isn't supported well there you go - there goes nothing. Even if this lady doesn't win it raises the embarrassment stakes and gives organisations like the EU ammunition.

Words fail me

WTF I thought this scumbag government was the pits when Bliar got elected and its been on a steep decline ever since. I presume this was a sort of comedy piece. Carrot sh*t for brains surely doesn't think we's cynical - I mean really who'd have thought it. I'm all for bringing in a right to bear arms and declaring open season on the vermin.

Bob. Hitchen

To queue or not to queue that is the question

Funny thing is in the UK the one place I've never seen a queue is at a polling station in any kind of election. I heard on TV it took 8 hours in some queues. I would have thought that was damn dangerous in a country with the right to bear arms. Should sue the butt off the retards for making somebody have a day off work. I do like the idea of electing council office scumbags though especially since they have now been politically infiltrated.

Plodding is usually best

I suspect there's more to this story but we's never going to know. Anybody who uses wireless is open season give me ethernet or ethernet over mains everytime. Last time I looked with a laptop(some time back) there were about 10 wireless networks available only one of which was encrypted and it wasn't the three commercial ones - go figure. Police obviously decided that they had leapt before they looked and that Brazilian case is topical at the moment. It ain't like it's the crime of the century.

Re: Let's ignore the ridiculous penalty...

I'm still not sure what's being stolen here but if it's a crime then due process and proof should be required. Before all the patriots and their scumbag new labour(spit) allies had their way that was how the justice system operated. What's special about these RIAA arse holes are they like exempt from justice. I don't have file sharing software on any box on my network (to my knowledge) but there is a chance even with anti virus that the box has been seeded by some hacker. I'm sick of twats who either work for some branch of government or have like big business corrupted same trying to enforce summary punishment without recourse or adequate checks and balances.

Bob. Hitchen

Not a problem

I don't buy or listen to music the police should just issue a directive that no music is played on their premises and it would be advisable to stop getting their personal music from any outlet covered by the toe-rags. The next step would be to make sure that PRS and its employees are obeying every aspect of UK law. They would soon get the message!
