If we are sharing the NHS fibre, then what is to stop some entrprising script kiddie from tapping the NHS data? Genuine question, I have no real idea how the system is intended to work.
To me this seems a possible good step i.e. setting up standard ways to share data rather than a massive database that was created by the consultants so their employers could milk the system. I think it might be a good idea to wait and see what happens. Good point about HMG and IT though, I am not holding my breath - too dangerous.
"no desire from the music and film industries to impose the Act on small ISPs.". Who is running this, the industries or Offcom. Oh, sorry, forget I asked that.
the article does not mention when the complaints were made, just that the clip remained on line for a month. It could have been that the first complaint did not come in until after, say, 4 weeks, and that they clip was removed within one day. We just don't know.
I approve, but am not sure why they want to do this
I mean, if you set off a bomb using a mobile phone, then how much of the phone will be left to identify who's it was? Seems like an excuse to get all the phones registered to me.
So if it was created as something Governments can't reach, how is he proposing to police it? Yet another minister who wants to control the un-controllable, and the US Administration probably know this. Or maybe they just have more things to worry about right now, like the economy.
that Best Western are telling the truth here - after all, if 8 million records had been compromised then we would soon hear about it. Probably the reporter asked how many records were in the system, not how many could be reached using the compromised password and just ran from there. After all, how newsworthy would it be to state "Great Western computer network hacked, ten records may have been read"?
Why on this and a number of other threads people claim that copy protection and DRM are illegal? I thought that, at least in the USA, DRM was actually a part of their law (although EL Reg being a British site this of course does not apply here, but tell the mericans that). I'm not much of a gamer myself so I would not have seen any of the arguments on the subject, and am genuinely interested.
"Northrop's DSA rig will be tested over the summer against multiple "intruder" aircraft, to see if it can respond safely.". I'd hate to be the pilot of the intruder if it doesn't respond safely.
By exposing this kind of rubbish the authors may loose their jobs. They may well think their writing skills (at least fictional anyway) may justify them getting a similar job to you, thus giving you competition for the title of most amusing commentator on military matters.
FYI, Philatelic services are to do with stamp collecting and Smilers are a particular type of stamp. The first term has been around for years but the second; well, it probably did come fromt the whale song department.
Have you thought this through? What if al-Qaeda take the hump at the article and decide to bomb El Reg's offices (or maybe the nearby pub; they stand more chance of getting people there). I for one cannot do without my daily fix at the Register. Issue all the staff with steel helmets - that way they can do without the tin foil hats as well.
I suggested to my bank that they add a check box to their web site disabling the creation of new payees - I have already got all those I need set up. Once selected, I would have to ask my bank via a letter to re-enable creating new payees. That way, even if somebody did get my online banking details, they could not benefit from them.
If the phone lines were jammed, then surely as many fans on one side would be unable to get through as the other. Or are they implying that the voting company knew what the person's vote was and blocked those who wanted to vote for Rhydian?

I can see a problem with this
If we are sharing the NHS fibre, then what is to stop some entrprising script kiddie from tapping the NHS data? Genuine question, I have no real idea how the system is intended to work.
Actually:

Hang on
"no desire from the music and film industries to impose the Act on small ISPs.". Who is running this, the industries or Offcom. Oh, sorry, forget I asked that.
Too true
You have said it all here.
I bet
they will be priced at £80 in the UK.
Actually
the article does not mention when the complaints were made, just that the clip remained on line for a month. It could have been that the first complaint did not come in until after, say, 4 weeks, and that they clip was removed within one day. We just don't know.
But they won't
listen to him, he is only a scientist who knows something about the subject.
We don't know who's going to end up paying for this"
We are, of course.
No reciprocal agreement
"There is no reciprocal agreement for European intelligence agencies to mine US banking data."
Just the same as extradition then, still I am sure the Americans won't misuse this...
I approve, but am not sure why they want to do this

The Internet
So if it was created as something Governments can't reach, how is he proposing to police it? Yet another minister who wants to control the un-controllable, and the US Administration probably know this. Or maybe they just have more things to worry about right now, like the economy.
Where is the file?
But a spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police told us it had handed a file to the CPS in July but had not yet heard back from them.
Its probably on a train somewhere then.
Lunchtime
"The Pentagon's famous bad-boy scientists, DARPA* - who slap the pendulous jowls of established wisdom with the gauntlet of disregard ".
Do you deliberately wait until lunchtime before you post these articles - you must have shares in a keyboard manufacturer,
Looks good enough
but the article does not seem to mention what range it has if driven at slower than 100. Anybody want to make a guess?
I would imagine
that Best Western are telling the truth here - after all, if 8 million records had been compromised then we would soon hear about it. Probably the reporter asked how many records were in the system, not how many could be reached using the compromised password and just ran from there. After all, how newsworthy would it be to state "Great Western computer network hacked, ten records may have been read"?
Can somebody explain

Respond safely
"Northrop's DSA rig will be tested over the summer against multiple "intruder" aircraft, to see if it can respond safely.". I'd hate to be the pilot of the intruder if it doesn't respond safely.
Carefull there Lewis,
By exposing this kind of rubbish the authors may loose their jobs. They may well think their writing skills (at least fictional anyway) may justify them getting a similar job to you, thus giving you competition for the title of most amusing commentator on military matters.
Ethanol
I thought that was for drinking, not for cars. Stop them from runing Friday nights (or afternoons if you work for El Reg).
@ Flatspot

Wait a minute
Have you thought this through? What if al-Qaeda take the hump at the article and decide to bomb El Reg's offices (or maybe the nearby pub; they stand more chance of getting people there). @ Jon

The result - nothing.
Type of fuel
How does the robot know whether to use diesel or petrol?
How can this be?
