"Any company that can only get out of their financial hole by outsourcing is already insolvent."

Yep, and their customers see it.

Another way to commit "customer suicide"? Get your invoices sent by a factoring company. Speaks volumes about your solvency!

Re: This is how it is working for us....

I suspect that's the sole reason Nokia 'outsourced' all Symbian employees to Accenture.

If Nokia'd made them redundant, massive payouts. Ship 'em to Accenture, with a lot of mealy-mouthed words as to job-security, then let Accenture kick 'em out after a few months. No doubt, Nokia would slide a back-hander to Accenture for the compensation, having saved a few million euro's.

Someone tell me it's not true??

Devious millionaire bastards.

Beats the living daylights out of me...

1) I reckon my single-speed Jopo* can go faster than that, unaided. It's only got one brake (back-pedal to activate it), but it seems to break an ancient English law, forbidding travel by witchcraft

2) Here, it's ILLEGAL to ride on the road, if there's a footpath. You must use the footpath.

3) Until recently I could ride my moped on the footpath. Unfortunately, that's been curtailed. So have a lot more young moped riders in the last 2 years.

Ahhh, Sutton Coldfield...

Grief, being shown around the old 405-line TV transmitter as a teenager.

Thing was stuck together by duct-tape. I remember seeing an old resistor (not colour-coded as was, but coded with rings and spots - wartime stuff). It was hanging in the air, tied each end by a bit of twisted wire...Made me proud to get home, switch on my old monochrome 10" Murphy, knowing the signal I was watching was going through that resistor, 20 miles away.

Re: Tethering...

You're referring to Joikuspot, I guess.

"...which makes it effectively utterly useless."

So, not having security makes it utterly useless??? Sorry, I don't get your reasoning. Look, I didn't want to go around the school to give 'em passwords. I just announced at coffee-time to switch WiFi on, and look for "N8-00". Grief, just use the damn thing, M'kay? Only a couple of hours or so, no big deal. Cost me nothing (phone on charge entire time) as I'm on an "as much as you can eat" tariff. For about a fiver (€6 - $7) a month. Brilliant.

Nokia patents...larf-a-minute!

Mate of mine at Nokia wrote a few, he got about £300 a pop. (year 1998)

I came up with one, and the boss told me to patent it. When I looked at all the horrendous paperwork, (which I'd have to do in my spare time (go figure!), it simply wasn't worth the effort.

It was a 'blocking patent' - to prevent other manufacturers from using it. £300 for a few weekend's work, with no guarantee of success? Fuc*k that, I'm taking the missus to Cyprus for a couple of weeks.

El Reg. questions...

"We do note that there seems no reason for the ground cameras to stay so far away from the intrepid birdman during launch"

Yep, noticed that. I also queried the need for the 'assistants' to run away sharpish - out of camerashot - in the opposite direction to supposed flight. That got me instantly. Plus, ever seen a hang-glider wing flex? I have, and from being strapped underneath it. I had wires from the control bar ("A-frame") to the centre of the wing, and even then the thing flexed.

I thought it was great, but now I'm inclined to call 'fake'. However, I'd love to be proven wrong.

Heat and MTBF (Mean time before failure)

I understood the rule of thumb was 10 degrees (non-libyan or American degrees, but Celcius) increase in operating temperature meant 50% decrease in MTBF...

It's the apps!

It's that bloody simple. Find a cooking site that lets you have a phone app, and it's...Android.

Same as Angry Birds for the newer games, newspapers...whatever.

They're (the companies who punt the apps) aren't interested in Windows, nor Symbian. OK, iOS, but I reckon that's not keeping up.

Makes me weep I bought a Nokia 08 sometimes. Pity those poor folks who shelled out for a Meego 09. They got nothing except a pretty (expensive, as well as aesthetic) phone.

EVEN THE REG!!!

"The easiest way to get The Register App on any other mobile devices is to point the device at:

m.reg.cx

It will either sniff out your device and help you download the correct app, or it will present you with a list of manufacturers and operating systems that you can walk through to find the right app for your device.

My N8? "Sorry, your device isn't supported..."

'Black-box' thinking from most commentards.

Where do you think your 5V or whatever is going? Into the 'phone's switch-mode PSU!

It ain't that fussy, particularly as the charger's probbly made at Foxconn, and 5v is just a rule of thumb...

(Why 5V? Thought mine was 8,4? Check when I get home...)

IIRC, 5V was chosen in the dark ages (TTL chips being dark on the outside) as the transition between the Zener effect and the Impatt effect. Thermal stability.

Definitely open to corrections - I remember this from a 1977 lecture.

The encyclopaedia is definitely worth owning, and I'm seriously considering shovelling £1200 to get the last version. (Thank God, even unemployment lets me keep a credit card or three...).

Encyclopaedia Britannica is one of the Icons of American Literature (don't let the name fool you).
