I'm still not convinced that either HD format is going to take off, at least not until the players are at Asda-style prices. If I want to play games, I'm either going to go for the Xbox (more games) or the Wii(fun games). If I want to watch movies, I'll buy a dedicated HD player, and probably a dual-format one in order to hedge my bets.
In many ways I think this is of Sony's making, the PS2 could have been a lot more advanced that the PS1.5 that it actually was, and they could have got cracking on the PS3 sooner than they did. But no, they didn't see credible threats to the massive-anyway PS2 revenues so they sat on their collective arses, and consequently appear to have been caught with their pants down. Basically a hare and tortoise situation.
