JJ, virtually any device that USB could do, firewire could do (admittedly a stripped down USB 1.1 like mode might have helped for keyboards etc). But we are stuck with USB now, so if USB 3.0 could replace VGA and SATA it would be an easy no brainier for users to plug and play. Plus the polling of simple USB devices greatly strained systems in the past.
