Brian Blessed will become the new sound of satnav this October after a Facebook group of 25,000 showed support.
With no current TomTom voices similar to the actor's famous boom, Mancunian motorist Richard Gardner started the unwieldily-named Facebook group, Campaign to get Brian Blessed to do a voice-over for my sat nav, …
It turned out that the rom I used came pre-loaded with novelty voices. Knowing full well my she would never work out how to access the voice menus I set it to Picard.
Brian featured in an early 90's biopic about George Mallory, who disappeared while climbing Everest "because it's there". Satnav users will be familiar with going up mountains for no sensible reason too - it's a perfect match.

Are the speakers in TomToms up to it
it probably needs something > 1MW to get the correct volume
Who's next for the SAT Nav?
HRH Liz the 2nd, gotta be (accept no substitutes!)
I was asked to re-flash my mums satnav

But...
..will it automatically cancel the current volume selection, thus ensuring that Mr Blessed's voice booms out at a full billion decibels?
So when do we get
Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime)?
William Daniels (KITT)?
Anthony Daniels (C3P0)?
William Daniels already done

It'll all end in tears
I was recently at a concert where Brian was the compare for the evening where he proudly announced :
"It's great to back in Yorkshire. I am a proud Yorkshireman born just down the road in Mexico"
So chances of getting to where you actually wanted to go 0%, chances of being diverted up Everest 100%
It might end in tears, you never now
"It's great to back in Yorkshire. I am a proud Yorkshireman born just down the road in Mexico"
Though it's possible he might a said that, he's daft enough :)
It's more likely he said 'born just down the road in Mexbro' (Mexborough to give it it's posh name)
Ah, all good myths :)
Mexborough ....
I was born there - you aren't a relation are you Dave ???
Brian Blessed as the voice of satnav?
What about the honey-toned Charlotte Green instead?
Even more appropriately
Brian featured in an early 90's biopic about George Mallory, who disappeared while climbing Everest "because it's there". Satnav users will be familiar with going up mountains for no sensible reason too - it's a perfect match.
Excellent stuff
Just make sure it comes with a low volume setting!
Errr
Who exactly is Darth Vadar?
Ooops
I'm sure the chilling "You have failed me for the last time" line that sounds when you take a wrong turn will go down well
Google TTS
Next campaign: a Blessed option for Google Text To Speech on my phone!
Pace notes
I've not got a sat nav and I'm not getting one until I find one with a stressed sounding Welshman reading the directions like rally pace notes.
Well now!
This has absolutely made my day! Might even have to buy one of the blessed things now.
... get it? See what I did there?
Got to be
Jessica Rabbit (Kathleen Turner) or someone else with suitably sultry voice.
And for the girls, Captain Jack Sparrow !!!
Paris? Err, no.
Other suggestions?
What about Joanna Lumley?
Or the voice of the M&S "food porn" adverts?
Epic win ...
Although I dislike satnavs intensely, preferring the analogue version known as a 'map', I feel a sneaky reflashing of SWMBO's TomTom coming on :-)
Chiswick! Fresh horses!
All Borovia rejoices ...
Not the finest direction giver in the world but the MOST ENTHUSIASTIC!!!
Android?
Shame they're not concentrating on writing an Android version of Tom Tom.
By the way, Yoda and Darth are not the real deal (but sound close. Only C3PO, Dora and Homer are.
But for the iPhone?...
Now if only TomTom can sort out in-app purchases of voices (and maps) on the iPhone...
Turn it down a notch
"HELLO! I'M BRIAN BLESSED! TURN RIGHT 500 YARDS! WHAT?! NO I DON'T DO METRIC LUVVIE!!!"
He seemed
quite restrained in that youtube clip, hope he'll turn it up for the satnav
Gotta have....
R Lee Emery, the Sergeant Major from Full Metal Jacket!
Re:Gotta have
Just don't seek directions to anywhere in Texas.
To you, maybe...
"Blessed, most famous for his role as Prince Vultan of the Hawkmen in Flash Gordon,"
To me, he'll always be Richard IV.
WHAT!?
TOMTOMS ALIVE!?
He's Richard IV, my liege....
Go to Chiswick, with fresh horses!
Hawkmen!
DRRRIIIIIVVVE!
