The Blu-ray Disc Association has completed its specification for standardising the inclusion of stereoscopic 3D content on its optical discs.
The material will be presented in resolutions up to and including 1080p. Crucially, the BDA said, it doesn't depend on any specific 3D technology - active-shutter or polarised lens - or …
This is getting a bit complex for me now, reasons for not thinking 3D was that great in the past is apparently my colour-blindness is getting in the way of certain 3D compositions, apparently there are ways around it though I just have to get the right type of tinted lenses before putting on a pair of 3D glasses.
if it wasnt for the ps3 blu-ray would still be lagging behind much more than it is now. the ps3 launches BR and now so many people have BR players due to the ps3. plus, the ps3 is a computer - not just a standalone player, so its much easier to update isnt it?
3D isnt just using glasses. I saw a 3D TV last month that didnt require any glasses. Looks like a 42' LCD but its 3D. Very cool... but like using glasses, does give you eye strain.
Do a search for Philips WOW 3D. Thats the set I saw.
just what the public needed, another reason to get shafted by the media giants. Assuming they won't rise the price. pah. They'll use any excuse to hike prices, and make Blu-Ray less attractive in the process.
They added a codec to the spec, amazing. really, amazing.
And for those of us smart enough to see the death of Bluray in the same way as minidisk? I'll stick to the ample download options and wait for the rest of you to catch up thanks, just like I did with the MP3 revolution 10 years ago.
what broadband do you have that lets you download 50 gb in 90 mins? thats amazing! and im sure if all the country started using it it would only get faster eh? <facepalm>
or are you one of the lot that think a 1gb 'HD' rip is of eval quality to a 25-50gb BR disc? or one of the people that cant see the difference between HD and SD (i.e. people who shouldnt be allowed to drive as their eyesight is so poor)
Ahh, someone fooled into thinking HD Downloads are the same as Blu-Ray in terms of quality...
Do you want to buy some magic beans? Clearly anyone that thinks a 2GB compressed video will look the same as a 50GB Blu-Ray, when they both use the same H.264 AVC codec is clearly some kind of moron.
Yeah, and you no doubt were also crowing about the death of CD and before that vinyl.
Oh, but wait. CD isn't dead and vinyl is actually coming BACK.
Minidisc competed with CD, not with downloads. Downloads won't replace discs because the majority of human beings derive gratification from owning THINGS that they can hold in their hands. We accumulate stuff in our lives not because we have to but because we enjoy it.
A hard disk with GB's of MP3 might appeal to geeks (among which I count myself), but it does not appeal to the majority of people (and for those that might be tempted, the day that that hard drive bricks itself and takes the entire MP3/DVD collection with it is the day they will go running back to their book cases and the shiny discs).
Can you tell me how downloading and storing an entire movie and all its extras on backed up hard disk storage is in any way better than just buying the Blu-Ray?
Blu-Ray capacity is 50GB....so you'll need 100GB to store it and its backup...so 10 movies would take up 1TB, which costs £70, so you're talking about £7 per movie in storage costs (until your hard drive breaks, then you have to replace it and pay again). Plus the cost of the movie download which will push the total cost over that of just buying the Blu-Ray, and it'd take over 100 hours to download over a 1Mbps internet connection....that's 2 DAYS! Assuming your ISP doesn't get upset and throttle your connection for downloading too much.
most of the available extras a cr4p anyway, and available on youtube. But have you heard of compression? Plenty of people downloading HD movies of between 8 & 16 GB which are damned near perfect copies of the original Blu-Ray.
Causes eye stress for most and headaches for many because unconsciously you try to focus on further or nearer objects, but's an illusion, all the image is at the screen distance. Up to 1/5th of people don't get much perception of it.
It's an illusion that relies on different image for each eye. But real Life or real 3D (holograms or spinning offset translucent screen) has true depth and will give 3D view even with one eye closed.
Try it. (close one eye and micro-jiggle head). With fake basic stereoscopic view the image is unchanged by head micro-movements.
overview of the Curren fake 3D (really Stereoscopic) here http://www.techtir.ie/forums/showthread.php?t=1459 and Wikipedia of course.
Indeed there is some value in a codec for Stereoscopy as there is much redundancy.
So if they ever release real 3D what will it be called? "Full 3D" ?
"But here’s the catch. While the PS3 has the graphical horsepower to stream two different 1080p video feeds at one time, one for each eye for the 3D effect, most current Blu-ray players don’t. In other words, if you have a stand alone Blu-ray player, you’ll not only have to buy a new 3D TV, but a 3D Blu-ray player too to get the full experience."
yawn. more stupidity. oh look, how many BR players have you bought now? 3? 4? why's that? out of date? so your blue ray player can't play blue rays? how about that now...
man, these manufacturers must really have some stupid shills who keep buying their products.
anyway, 3D? till it doesn't require glasses or sitting still in a particular position for the entire length of the film, it'll just ..... fail...
"The Blu-ray 3D specification is also designed to allow PS3 game consoles to play back Blu-ray 3D content in 3D. Additionally, the specification supports playback of 2D discs in forthcoming 3D players and can enable 2D playback of Blu-ray 3D discs on the large installed base of Blu-ray Disc players currently in homes around the world."

Talking of standards #
"polarised lens" I presume your talking about the glasses needed to view the content?
The crucial question being will someone actually develop some 3D specs that aren't made of cardboard and are actual glasses.
I can't see it being that popular, 3D isn't that great and definately seems to be a move away from the true HD quality available.

3D Glasses... #
There are better quality ones around, ones which are more like plastic sunglasses are easy to get.
For example...

Firmware upgradable.
Lets hope that fools that bought more expensive, inferior players don't get caught out with their players lack of upgradability..

Or my Samsung BDP-1600... #
That's upgradeable. In fact the majority of Profile 2 compatable players are. Also I paid less for that and my games console separately.
More a win for people who didn't jump onto Sonys over priced console.

Yes Bluray is already compressed. You can't take a 25+ GB file and compress it to 8 with the same class of codec and not reduce the quality.

What about DVD? #
Wouldn't using the alternative viewing angle function work?
A 3D player would need to output both at once.
With a standard player, your just choose which eye's view you want.

It's not 3D.
Just stereoscopic.

MiniDisc dead? #
..oh, you mean on the retail side - yes, quite so.
On the recording and mastering side, plenty of studios still use minidisc as a medium just the same as they use DAT for mastering ("DAT?" ah-huh)
