Register Hardware has already brought you the news that Sony's PlayTV PS3 DVR add-on will be available in Europe this September, but now we can tell you exactly which day.
Sony_Play_TV Sony's PlayTV: arrives here on 10 September
According to David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, the unit will land in …
Ive been looking forward to this for a while unoffically preordered with a friend at my local sony centre!!! heres hoping the picture is nicely upscaled and the guide functions are all good and easy to use! :)
Unless there are some very clever energy saving tricks in this, then it'll easily win the 'highest power consumption PVR' acolade without a fight!
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/06/04/choice_gadget_power_costs/ quotes an Aussie study which says that the PS3 already chugs down £120 of juice a year if 'frequently left on idle'. Presumably PlayTV will require the PS3 to be left on 24/7 to access the HDD?
Very good, but surely the PS3 needs to be "ON" to write to the HDD?
Does anyone know if the PlayTV automatically switches the PS3 between "ON" and "Standby" when it's actually recording, or can it write to the HDD when in "Standby".

That Aussie article has been discredited many times already. PS3 only used 170w, when ON, when it's in standby, it's 5w
Newer 40GB units use 130w, even less. Something also this article conviently fails to mention.
Incidently, a Xbox360 uses 180w also when left on, and 8w in standby...
